August 1999, William, Penp Life, .Page 5 Tournament draws record number of golfers PITTSBURGH — A record 137 William Penn golfers enjoyed a nearly perfect July day as they participated in the Association’s Sixth Annual National Golf Tournament at the Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in West Middlesex, Pa. The sun shined most brightly on Ed and Betty Grib who captured the men’s and women’s low net titles. Ed’s 71 and Betty’s 74 made the Gribs the second husband and wife team to win the tournament’s low net titles. The day was just as pleasant for Bill Pini and Marvis Snyder. Mr. Pini won the men’s low gross title by shooting a four over-par 76, while Ms. Snyder captured the women’s low gross title with a round of 86. Each of the four champions took home a new pair of golf shoes as a prize for their fine efforts. Mr. Pini also took home two additional prizes for hitting the longest drive on the 9th hole and getting closest to the pin on the 18th hole. Joining Mr. Pini as winners of the tournament’s various skill shot contests were: Steve Sipos with the longest men’s putt on hole #3 and Jan Close with the longest women’s putt on hole #6; Lynn Paolicelli with the longest women’s drive on hole #4; Art Mayor and Jan Close for getting closest to the line on hole #15; and Helen Francus for getting the closest to the pin on hole #14. The only prize that went unclaimed was the new car for a hole-in-one on hole #8. With the pin placed near the left edge of the green, many golfers found getting their tee shot near the cup a little more difficult than they imagined. Only a handful of golfers placed their tee shots on the green, and no one got closer than 10 feet from the hole. Nevertheless, everyone enjoyed the added challenge of the hole-in-one contest and looked forward to taking another shot at it next year. After the day’s golfing was done, the golfers and their guests gathered for the annual golf awards banquet at the Sheraton Inn-Shenango. Once again, the informal affair proved to be the highlight of the weekend as smiles and laughter could be seen and heard throughout the dining room. After a delicious dinner served by the hotel staff, National Secretary E. E. Vargo emceed a short program which included remarks from National President Stephen G. Danko. President Danko thanked all those in attendance for making the tournament the most successful ever. He also spoke briefly about his recent meeting with President Bush and reaffirmed the Hungarian community’s support for the government’s latest efforts to aid Hungary in its democratization process. Secretary Vargo then began handing out the prizes to all the winners at this year’s tournament. Each winner was greeted with a round of applause from the audiGolfers check the scoreboard as the scores from the early foursomes are tabulated and recorded. (Photo by Louis A. But these weren’t the only winners that evening. A number of both golfers and non-golfers walked away with one of the many door prizes given away. The luckiest of all was George Martin of Branch 18 who won the evening’s special door prize: a golf getaway weekend for two. The prize included a two-night stay at the Sheraton Inn-Shenango plus 18 holes of golf at the Tam O’Shanter Golf Course. The getaway weekend prize was furnished compliments of the Sheraton and Tam O’Shanter. The level of excitement in the room built as the time drew closer for the annual auction raffle for a new set of golf clubs and bag. The members-only auction produced many groans from the losers as they were eliminated from the contest. It also produced one big cheer for the eventual winner, Robin L. Pini. At 10 years of age, Robin, a member of Branch 352 Coraopolis, Pa., was the youngest person ever to win the auction raffle. The auction raffle closed the weekend’s official program, leaving those in attendance with many pleasant memories. It seemed an appropriate way to end this fraternal weekend which began in high spirits at the golfers reception Friday evening at the Sheraton. The reception area was filled to capacity with golfers and guests eager to start the weekend. Everyone enjoyed a delicious buffet which included kolbász, cold cuts, pizza and an array of homemade pastries and cookies. After all had their fill, Secretary Vargo opened the annual putting contest. For a $2 donation guests received three chances to sink a putt. Those who made their putts were Bahnt Getz, Ray Mei, Arpad Sibrik, Jim Douds, Bob Kelley, Richard Mohn, Mike Totsky, Jerry Hambry, Charles Furedy, Jim Deak, Nick Gulacsi, Ken Coleman and Ernest Ecsedi. Each winner received a small prize as a momento of the putting contest. The big winner at the putting contest, however, was the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation. The contest raised more than $400, all of which benefited the scholarship foundation. It was just part of a truly enjoyable fraternal weekend which left everyone eagerly awaiting next year’s tournament. We wish to thank all of the employees and members who worked long and hard to make our golf tournament the success it was. We also thank the golfers and guests in attendance who made this weekend memorable.
