Kovach Secretary, National Auditing Committee It is with a great deal of pleasure that we report that Mrs. Judy Heiser of Drums, Pa., has accepted the position of branch coordinator for Branch 9 Hazleton. Mrs. Heiser, 38, works part time as a medical secretary for a local doctor. Her husband, Richard, is employed as an order administrator for Doer-Oliver Corp. in Hazleton. The Heisers are the parents of two children. The Heisers are very down-toearth, hard working, good family people. We are sure the Association will be proud of them. Branch 15 Chicago, IL By Frank Balogh Branch 15 President Emeritus This month our Branch 15 spotlight shines on Eva Laczina. Eva, the daughter of Branch President Arpad Laczina, is a high school senior, a very good student, and a lieutenant in her school’s ROTC program. Even though she was born in the United States, Eva reads, speaks and writes Hungarian fluently. She plans to attend college next year and eventually become a teacher. We can now start thinking about the bowling tournament. Get your teams together. It really isn’t too early. Branch 18 held its annual election of officers on Dec. 5,1988. We extend our congratulations to those elected as officers for 1989: Andrew Toth, president; John Molnár and Steve Szatmári, Judy Heiser, shown here with her husband Richard, recently accepted the position of branch coordinator for Branch 9 Hazleton, Pa. vice presidents; Steve Szalai, treasurer; Barbara House, secretary; Stephen P. Danko, controller; Betty Kocsis, Joe Soter, Frank Tima, Ernie Ecsedi and Peter Bandy, auditors; and Darlene Szatmári, fraternal coordinator. Our members also passed unanimously a motion to name outgoing Branch President Stephen Danko as the branch’s president emeritus. This well deserved honor was met with a standing ovation from those in attendance. Again, we would like to extend to all our members an invitation to attend our membership meetings. They are held on the first Monday of each month at the Branch 18 Hungarian Social Club located at 1410 Southfield Road, Lincoln Park. Please come and have a voice in how your club is run. The Ladies Auxiliary held its Christmas party on Dec. 17, 1988. After an excellent dinner, those in attendance sang carols and enjoyed each others company. The ladies meet the third Monday of each month. Everyone is welcome. I hope everyone’s holiday was a great success, and that you got everything you wanted. Branch 19 New Brunswick, NJ By Ruth Vasvary Branch 19 Vice President Our branch held its annual election meeting Dec. 5 at the Bayard Street Presbyterian Church Hall. Re-elected to office for 1989 were: Joseph Arvay, president; Ruth Vasvary, vice president; Irene Evans, treasurer; Barbara Hegedűs, secretary; and Alex Horvath and Louis Keller, auditors. Mrs. Vasvary conducted the installation of the officers. Our family Christmas party was held Dec. 4 at the church hall. Joseph Arvay, chairman of the Association’s Board of Directors and branch president, greeted the guests and all the officers of Branch 19. Entertainment for the party was once again provided by Jonjie the Clown who is always a welcome part of the party. The Rev. Joseph Bodnar of the Bayard Street Presbyterian Church led the singing of Christmas carols. Santa and Mrs. Claus (Arlene Vasvary Miller) arrived and presented gifts and candy to the children. A buffet supper was then enjoyed by all. St. Ladislaus Church will host a special Mass and dinner celebrating the 35th anniversary of Ft. Basil’s ordination to the priesthood on Saturday, Jan. 14. Mass is at 4:00 p.m. with dinner at 5:30. Tickets are $12.50 each and are available from the rectory by calling 359-6510. Our branch meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. on the first Monday of each month at the Bayard Street Presbyterian Church Hall, located on the corner of Bayard and Joyce Kilmer Avenue in New Brunswick. Branch 34 Pittsburgh, PA By Mary Ann Kara Branch 34 Member Branch 34 held its annual election meeting on Saturday, Dec. 10, at St. Ann’s Hungarian Church Hall in Hazelwood, Pa. Outgoing Branch President Michael Kara welcomed those members in attendance and extended greetings to the branch’s special guests, National Secretary E. E. Vargo and his wife Betty and National Vice President Zoltán B. Emri. Before conducting the elections, President Kara announced his resignation. He proudly stated that after 30 years of dedication, he would no longer accept nominations for office. He thanked all the members for their support and encouragement in the past and offered his support to the newly elected officers in the future. He thanked everyone for allowing him the opportunity to proudly serve Branch 34 and the William Penn Association. The members responded with a warm round of applause and many regrets over his decision. A motion was then passed to name Mr. Kara as the branch’s president emeritus. The members gave Mr. Kara a standing ovation. Unanimously elected as branch officers for 1989 were: Robert Kapinus, president; Arpad Mayor, vice president; Liz Gullace, secretary; Lou Kubus, treasurer; and Andrew Vámos, William Mayor and Bob Gullace, auditors. Mr. Vargo delivered a speech on the importance of the William Penn and the honor of serving as a branch officer. He then swore in the newly elected branch officers. After the swearing in, all members were invited to stay and enjoy a delicious Christmas dinner and refreshments. Branch 159 Phoenixville, PA By Williarp Kovach Branch 159 Coordinator Bemard Kocsi, a 50-year member of the William Penn Association, was recently interviewed about Hungarian culture on a local radio show on station WYIS. The show features interviews with local people involved in the arts and entertainment. Barney reflected on his Hungarian heritage and performed two violin solos, "Akácos Ut” and "Csak Egy Kis Lany Van a Világon.” Branch 159 is planning to send bowlers to the annual bowling tournament to be held in Pittsburgh over the Memorial Day weekend. Any William Penn member in our part of Pennsylvania who is interested in bowling in the tournament can contact our branch, and we will see that you are placed on one of the teams. Sabo Branch 590 Reporter Branch Vice President and sales representative Bob Macker opened our Nov. 20 general meeting at the Egret Community Hall by welcoming members and our guests, Bill and Pauline Troll and Stephen Wuensche. In the absence of our beloved late president, the Rev. Arpad George, past National President Julius Macker presided over the meeting and conducted the election and swearing in of our branch officers for 1989. The newly elected officers are: Irene Redden, president; Rose Darab, vice president; Mary Veres, secretary; Betty Bartus, treasurer; Elizabeth Noel, Vilma Molnár and Elizabeth Pozey, auditors; and Irene Sabo, reporter. Branch 590 began its campaign to aid the repressed Hungarians from Erdély by donating $50 towards humanitarian relief. More donations will follow. Eva Laczina of Branch 15 Chicago stands tall in her ROTC uniform. She is the daugher of Branch President Arpad Laczina. A donation in memory of the Rev. Arpad George was graciously acknowledged by the Rev. Paul Kovács, administrator of the Bethlen Home in Ligonier, Pa. Our branch Christmas party was held Sunday, Dec. 11, at Serena’s. Irene Redden served as chairwoman for the annual holiday event. More information on the party will appear in our next branch report. Our branch is planning to send a group to see a production of the musical "Can-Can” at the Naples Dinner Theatre. The play will run from March 8 to 23, 1989. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Harold E. Robinson Branch 800 Reporter Branch 800 held its regular meeting on Dec. 6 at Our Lady of Lourds Church Hall in Altoona. A report was given on the memorial Mass which was held at St. John’s Church. There was a very good turnout at the Mass, held annually on Thanksgiving to pray for our deceased members. Our branch decided to give Christmas baskets of food to the needy. We were also told that many people in the Altoona area need usable furniture and bedding.
