March 1989, William Penn Life, Page 7 In Memóriám ':z ________________i________ MSGR. PAUL L. RICHTER STEUBENVILLE, OH — The members of Branch 8164 were saddened by the recent death of Msgr. Paul L. Richter, the branch’s spiritual advisor. Msgr. Richter, 81, passed away Feb. 12, 1989. He was born Dec. 9, 1907, in Columbus, Ohio, a son of the late Stephen and Frances Thone Richter. Msgr. Richter earned a bachelor of arts degree from St. Francis (Wise.) Seminary in 1929, and completed his theological educa­tion at the North American Col­lege in Rome in 1933. He was ordained in 1932 at the chapel of German College in Rome. In 1933 he was appointed as a parish priest at St. Anthony’s Church in Steubenville, where he served for 50 years until his retire­ment in 1983. During his years as pastor of St. Anthony’s, Msgr. Richter added two buildings to the parish school, built a new rectory and conducted a successful fund raising campaign for the construction of a new school. He received the honor of Do­mestic Prelate in April 1957 from Pope Pius XII. In 1987, he receiv­ed the Franciscan University of Steubenville’s Poverello Medal, the school’s highest honor. In addition to his duties as pastor of St. Anthony’s, Msgr. Richter filled many other dioce­san offices including diocesan con­­suitor, member of the diocesan administrative board, synodal ex­aminer, director of the Catholic Community Center, chairman and treasurer of Catholic Central High School Board and the bish­ops representative for hospitals. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Surviving is a brother, Louis of Columbus. He was buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Columbus. Contributions may be made to the Msgr. Paul L. Richter Memor­ial Fund to benefit St. Anthony’s Parish. May he rest in peace.
