Page 8, William Penn Life, August 1988 Branch News Branch 1 Bridgeport, CT Branch 1 wishes to announce that it has moved its office to a new location. Our new address and phone number are: 856 Fairfield Avenue Bridgeport, Conn. 06604 (203)368-1851 Ethel Katona, branch coordinator Branch 15 Chicago, IL By Arpad Laczina Branch 15 President Branch 15 wishes to express its gratitude to the very Rev. Father András Eordogh as well as to all those who sacrificed their time and energy to make our picnic on June 26 a resounding success. This was the first picnic which was sponsored jointly by St. Stephen’s Hungarian Catholic Parish and the members of William Penn Branch 15. The synergy of the joint effort and the relatively cool 75-degree temperature after a week in the sweltering 90’s brought almost 500 people to the county forest preserves. Everyone enjoyed the excellent food and cold drinks and was pleasantly exhausted from socializing, walking in the woods, chasing soccer balls on the field, playing chess and cards on the picnic tables, and participating in all the activities that are traditionally associated with Magyar picnics. The highlight of the afternoon was the freshly fried langos served in the late afternoon. We wish to thank everyone who contributed to the occasion by their presence and support. We also wish to remind all of our members that Branch 15 monthly meetings will resume on Sept. 18 at 3:00 p.m. in a new location: The Aranybika Restaurant meeting room at 7308 N. Rogers Ave., Chicago. For further information please call Branch President Arpad Laczina at 278-6637. Branch 18 Detroit, MI By Julia Danko and Andy Toth Our banquet held June 19 at the Hungarian Reformed Church honoring our newly elected national officers from Branch 18 was a huge success with more than 350 people attending. Our honorees were National President Stephen G. Danko, National Director John S. Molnár, National Auditor Steve P. Danko, Alternate Director Stephen J. Szatmári, and Alternate Auditor Frank Tima. We at Branch 18 are especially proud of these men. Congratulations. (Editor’s note: A story on the U.S. Congressman John Dingell (center) joins National President Stephen G. Danko and Branch 18 President Stephen Danko at the branch’s recent banquet honoring its members elected to national offices. banquet appeared in our July issue.) Branch President Steve Danko wants to thank Steve and Darlene Szatmári and all the women who helped prepare the dinner, as well as the waitresses, bartenders, dancers and all others who helped make this affair a success. You all did a fantastic job and proved why Branch 18 continues to move ahead. Branch 18 also wishes to thank Director Molnár and his wife Helen for their gracious and warm hospitality. After the banquet they hosted a special get-together for all the national officers, directors, auditors and their wives. Thank you John and Helen, you are really great. On Monday, June 20, Branch 18 hosted the wives of the national officers and directors for an outing at Frankenmuth. There, the wives saw all the beatiful Christmas decorations and ornaments, ate lunch, and enjoyed some shopping. The next day a special dinner was held in honor of Frank J. Radvany who will be retiring as a member of the Association’s Board of Directors. In attendance were the national directors and their wives, along with the officers of Branch 18 and their wives. The dinner was held at the Branch 18 social club where a delicious wooden platter meal was served. Music for the evening was furnished by Emil Jakab and his orchestra. In other news, Darlene Szatmári and Helen Danko left for Hungary July 3 with 20 children ages 8 to 14. They will enjoy the camp facilities at Fonyod Liget and a tour of Hungary’s famous sites. We wish all of you a successful and happy trip and a safe return. Branch 18 Hungarian Dancers will also be on vacation until their director, Darlene Szatmári, returns from Hungary. On Aug. 15, 11 people from Detroit will meet other members in New York to depart on a trip to Hungary. We wish them a pleasant and safe journey and hope everyone will enjoy themselves. The Ladies Auxiliary held its last meeting of the summer on June 20. The next meeting will be in September. Have a nice vacation ladies. The William Penn Social Club was recently closed for two weeks as workers redecorated the Club. You will be even more proud now to be a member of the Club. Branch 18 Golf Tournament Walter Burinda and Janet Totsky captured the men’s and women’s division titles at the annual Branch 18 Golf Tournament held June 26 at the Riverview Highlands Golf Course. Mr. Burinda shot a low net of 70 while Ms. Totsky scored a low net of 74. Sixty golfers participated this year on a beautiful, warm day under a blue, cloudless sky for prizes worth more than $600 and the title of Club Champs. At the completion of play, we met at our social club to enjoy a fine meal and the awarding of the prize money. Approximately 45 players shared in the prize money. Co-chairmen Steve Vargo, Andy Toth and Steve P. Danko wish to thank Walter Burinda, Mike Totsky, Bill Papp, Ernest Molnár, and Joe Nemeth for their help. Hope to see some of you in Brunswick, Ohio, July 23 and all of you at next year’s tournament. We close this article by wishing all of you health, happiness and a safe summer. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Helen R. Kaluczky Branch 28 Reporter It was Friday, July 15 — 90 degrees in the sun, but, at the home of Branch 28 President Steve Sándor, we held our bacon fry in the cooling breezes under the beautiful sycamore tree that covers his backyard. Thank you, Steve and Peg, for a wonderful get-together. We enjoyed the bacon, kolbász, sloppy joes, hot rice and broccoli dish, hot zucchini and sausage dish, baked beans, cold macaroni salad, tossed lettuce and tomato salad, sliced onions, tomatoes and peppers. You name it, we had it. For dessert there were cookies, pizzelles and fruit salad. Thank you to those who came and brought contributions to the festivities. We really had a spectrum of all ages there, including four generations from one family: greatgrandmother Anna Sándor; her daughter, Irene Nemeth; Irene’s daughter, Tina Cardelein; and Tina’s daughter, Jessica. The same also holds true with Margaret Burnett and her family who are William Penn Branch 28 members. Not too long ago — Veronica and John Dankovich — may they both rest in peace. Our special branch representative, Alan Szabó, had a chance to witness a true Hungarian tradition in that bacon fries are quite new to him. He hopes to get more of the young people involved and try to continue our heritage with them. He has been successful in signing up quite a few and hopes that he can get them all interested in our Branch 28 doings and meetings. We will probably hold our first fall meeting on the third Sunday of September at Steve and Peg Sandor’s home, 133 Struthers-Coitsville Road, Lowell ville, Ohio. We will make further plans for a bingo social to be held in October at the Donald Avenue hall. We still have a few dates coming up in between, in particular, the 66th Annual Family Festival in Wellsburg, W.Va., to benefit the William Penn Home for the elderly. It will be held on Aug. 7. We hope that you can be there. We also hope to see you at the annual Hungarian Day Picnic held by the American-Hungarian Federation of Churches and Societies. The picnic will be held on Aug. 14 at the Shady Run Picnic Grounds in Youngstown. For further community doings, tune in to WKTL 90.7 FM on Saturdays at noon for "Souvenirs of Hungary” hosted by the Endre Check Family. All requests are welcome. Branch 159 Phoenixville, PA By William J. Kovach Branch 159 Coordinator Congratulations to Elsie Kovach who was recently elected as vice chairperson of the Democratic Party in Chester County. Elsie and Al, along with their four children and seven grandchildren, are members of the William Penn. Representing our branch were Steve and Mike Wald, Wayne and Darlene Wagner, and Jack Lippert. Although our final score was 423 targets out of a possible 500, we did not qualify for any of the trophy awards. This same team shoots in the summer league offered by the Mayville Gun Club each Tuesday night of 20 summer weeks. We are presently approaching the halfway point, and I will have results for you at the end of the season.
