Branch 14 Cleveland, OH By Dawn D. Ward Branch 14 Corresponding Secretary Members of Branch 14 are preparing for the Fifth Annual William Penn National Golf Tournament to be held near Cleveland, July 23 at the Brunswick Hills Golf Course. A Branch 14 golf meeting was held June 8. It was decided to have Branch 14 member Frank Borisz and his Orchestra provide dinner music during the banquet at the Harley Hotel. There will be an auction raffle for a set of golf clubs at the banquet, and, by that evening, someone could be the owner of the 1988 Pontiac Bonneville for shooting a hole-in-one on a designated par three. Numerous other prizes will also be awarded. If you are interested in attending the banquet or participating in the tournament, call the William Penn office at (216) 238- 8500. Branch 14 will also host an annual outing at Geauga Lake Park on Sunday Aug. 14. Admission is $5.00 for adult members and $8.25 for non-members. Members age 12 and under will be admitted free. A pavilion has been reserved as a central meeting place. You can leave your picnic basket there while you enjoy the rides or just walk around the park. All tickets are on an advance sale basis. We hope to see you at all the events planned for this summer. Branch 18 Detroit, MI By Barbara House Branch 18 Secretary Well, the tournament is now over. I know a good time was had by all. The hotel was superb. All the rooms were lovely. Due to the unseasonably warm weather, I’m sure we were very grateful for the swimming pool. My compliments to all the South Bend members. They all worked so hard to show us a great time. The dinner at the banquet was excellent. Thank you very much. They say lightning never strikes twice in the same place. Don’t say that to Mary Ivancso. Her ladies team again took first place. Great work, Mary; we’re very happy for you. Congratulations to Branch 18 for our men’s team. They took first place. They are: Joe Soter, Kelly Heller, Les Pasko, Steve Somodi and Jim Schepens. We are especially proud of Betty Kocsis. I’m sure everyone heard when she completed her 257 game. Congratulations Betty. I wish Bela could have been there with you. Congratulations to Joe Lorincz, he is president of the Michigan Men’s Bowling Association. Joe Lorincz bowled in the first Bowling Tournament we ever had. All in all we had a great time. Before Sunday was over I even saw Ida Kanyo throw a strike. The Branch 18 William Penn Dancers put on the best performance ever. If you missed it, I’m sorry. They were super. The crowd called them back numerous times with their standing ovation. Keep up the good work, Darlene; all the hard work shows in your group. As this is being written, our branch is busily preparing for a banquet on June 19. It is to honor our local officers who have been elected to the National level. The honorees are: Steven G. Danko, Steve Szatmári, John Molnár, Frank Tima and Steven P. Danko. The banquet will be held at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Allen Park. Guest speaker will be John Dingell. Music will be provided by Emil Jacob. The Ladies Auxiliary recently went to the Presidential Inn Dinner Theater. We saw a play entitled "I Do, I Do”. Between the laughter and reminiscing, 1 saw a tear or two. It was a terrific play. We are planning on returning in the fall when a new play begins. The Ladies Auxiliary takes a break for the summer, but will resume meetings on Sept. 19. Please feel free to attend our meetings. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Helen Kaluczky Branch 28 Reporter Thank you, South Bend, for a wonderful weekend at the bowling tournament. Although branch 28 didn’t have any teams participating, the two of us who were there enjoyed every minute of it—even the little soccer players who were running around the hotel—they are the future, believe it or not. Meanwhile, back in Youngstown, we had our last branch meeting of the season on June 19 at Steve and Peg Sandor’s home. Those attending were Steve’s mother, Mrs, Sándor (91 years of age, God bless her); Steve and Kathie Novak and daughter Kathie; Irene Nemeth; John and Helen Kaluczky; Frank and Mary Torok; Imre Magyar; and Elizabeth Szabó and son Alan, who is William Penn Association’s Special Representative in our town. His phone number is 792-7851. Elizabeth gave us some information on the Hungarian Heritage Center located at 300 Somerset St., New Brunswick, N.J. We think that this center is a worthwhile undertaking and so branch 28 voted to send them a donation. Many have already donated towards building the museum, library and archives. The dedication and formal opening of the center is planned for June 1989. Do hope that everyone keeps a little time open for the occasion. What a wonderful happening that will be—a true representation of our Hungarian culture and heritage. The names of all donors will be recorded in a permanent registry to be displayed at the center. Our own William Penn Association is already one of those donors, but a total of $4.1 million in capital and endowment funds are needed. There are so many who need donations—the William Penn Home in Wellsburg, W. Va., to provide cable television for the residents; the William Penn Scholarship Fund; the Rev. Sándor Farkas’ refugee services at the Hungarian Presbyterian Church of Youngstown—surely all are worthwhile causes. We all should petition Congress, the Senate, and the Internal Revenue Service for restoration of the entire "Charitable Contribution Deduction For Non Itemizers”. That is most of us who can afford only a little bit here and a little bit there as it is now, but we could be more generous knowing that we could deduct the same on our next income tax return Well, getting back to the real world again—the weeks come and go but we can’t tell the world, "stop, we want to get off”. So we make our schedules and our dates for the future events—a bacon fry for William Penn Branch 28 members on Friday, July 15 at the home of our President Steve Sándor at 5:00 p.m. Come and bring your "nash?”, a few portable chairs, and maybe some cookies and a side dish. The bacon is on the house. On Sunday, July 10, St. Stephen of Hungary’s will hold a picnic at the Shady Run Picnic Grounds. There will be three bands and food and drink, so come and enjoy yourselves. Congratulations to all the July brides and grooms, especially Shirley Masters and Steve Szabó, who will make the plunge on July 9. Best wishes, Shirley and Steve, and may you have a wonderful future together. Get well wishes to all of our friends who are ill at this time. It is really bad as the weather has been so hot and dry. Pray for rain. For all your insurance needs, contact Gabe Nameth, branch 28 coordinator, at 792-8145. Branch 34 Pittsburgh, PA Branch 34 will charter a bus to transport its members to the Family Festival at the William Penn Home on Sunday, Aug. 7. The bus will leave from St. Ann’s Hungarian Church at 9:00 a.m. and will depart the Festival grounds at 6:00 p.m. Those wishing to reserve a seat on the bus should sign up at the church hall. Bus fare will be decided upon at the next branch meeting. 3rd Annual William Penn Association Branch 14 Day at Geauga Lake Sunday, August 14,1988 Send Tickets To: Name:_________________________________________________ Address: Phone:____________________________________________________ No. juvenile members.......................................FREE admission No. adult members________X $5.00 = $ _________________ No. non-members________X $8.25 = $ _________ TOTAL = $__________________ Send form & check payable to William Penn Association to: Dawn Ward, 16363 Pearl Road, Strongsville, OH 44136 Deadline for Reservations — August 6
