45th Notional Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days April 1988, William Penn Life, Page 5 Exciting weekend in store for guests SOUTH BEND, IN — An exciting weekend of fratemalism and fun awaits bowlers and guests planning to attend the 45th Annual National Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days to be held here May 27 to 29. All bowlers interested in entering this year’s tournament and who have not yet sent in their registration forms should mail their entries as soon as possible. All entry forms must be postmarked no later than midnight, April 17. The weekend will kick-off with the annual meetings of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation and the Louis L. Varga Scholars Guild. The Scholarship Foundation meeting will begin at 5:00 p.m. Friday, May 27, at the South Bend Marriott Hotel, headquarters for this year’s tournament. The Guild will hold its meeting immediately afterwards. All branches are encouraged to have representatives attend the Scholarship Foundation meeting. Later that evening, all bowlers and their guests will be invited to a special bowlers reception. This informal gathering will be held at the South Bend William Penn Home at 1024 W. Indiana Ave. On Saturday morning, the weekend’s activities shift to Chippewa Bowl, the site of this year’s bowling competition. Bus transportation between the hotel and bowling lanes will be provided to all bowlers. Saturday’s schedule will feature the men’s and women’s team competition, with the singles and doubles events to be held Sunday. Saturday evening, everyone’s focus will shift back to the William Penn Home for the annual tournament banquet. The banquet will feature a traditional Hungarian menu, including breaded chicken, homemade sausage, stuffed cabbage rolls and pastries. Emil Jakab’s Hungarian orchestra from Detroit will provide the music during and after dinner. Following the dinner, guests may opt to dance to the American music of South Bend’s own Dan Sugar Orchestra. The evening will also feature a return engagement by the popular Branch 18 Hungarian Dancers from Detroit. Throughout the weekend, nonbowling guests can fill their days exploring some of South Bend’s more interesting attractions. Varga Scholars Guild The next regular meeting of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc., and the Louis L. Varga Scholars Guild will be held during our 45 th Annual Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days in South Bend, Indiana, on May 27-28-29, 1988. This year the meeting will be held at the Marriott Hotel on Friday, May 27, 1988 at 5:00 p.m. A cordial invitation is extended to you and all members of your branch to attend our Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days and enjoy this fraternal activity. We are also soliciting your donations to this worthwhile project. As is stated in the By-Laws, any branch or individual donating a minimum of $100.00 is eligible to vote at the Annual Meeting. It is our hope that all of our branches and members will support the Scholarship Foundation that has been undertaken by our Association in helping provide higher education to our recently graduated high school members. Please make your donations to the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc., and send them to my attention for reporting at our Annual Meeting. Over the years, we have given financial assistance to many of our members who have excelled in various fields of endeavor. In order to maintain our fraternal, cultural and heritage work, we solicit your cooperation and donations to these worthwhile causes. Let us be ever mindful of the rich heritage passed to us by our forefathers. We should carry on their works and continue to build on this strong foundation by fostering the ideals of our Founding Fathers. This can be done if we all work together and bring new members into our Association. Tell the William Penn story and let everyone know that we are the largest Hungarian Fraternal Life Insurance Association. Eligibility Rules for Scholarship Recipients The Board of Directors has established the following rules governing eligibility for scholarship grants: a) A parent or grandparent of the applicant must be a benefit member of the William Penn Association or the student must be a child of a deceased member. b) The student applying for scholarship grant must be a benefit member of the William Penn Association as of January 1st of the year for which application is made. c) A benefit member is one who is insured for life, endowment or annuity benefits. d) Students may apply for scholarship grants who have been accepted by or are already attending an accredited college or university or school of nursing. A transcript of the applicant’s scholastic record must be attached to the application. e) A scholarship grant may be awarded to full-time students only. f) Parents of applicants must file confidential statement on form provided by the Foundation because scholarship grants are based primarily on basis of financial need of family and all other necessary information which may be required. g) Scholarship grants will be awarded by the Executive Committee of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc., once each year. All applications must be postmarked no later than May 31, 1988. Those postmarked later will not be considered. h) Grants will be paid directly to the applicant provided he or she is a member in good standing on the date the award checks are issued. i) Grants are awarded for a two or four year period. In order to be considered for scholarship grants in ensuing years, the student must notify the Secretary of the Foundation by letter postmarked no later than May 31,1988, that they wish to continue receiving the scholarship grant. In addition to this, as soon as they are available, the student member must submit scholastic record for the previous semester and proof of enrollment for continuing term. Letter, however, must be sent even though scholastic record and proof of enrollment is not available by May 31, 1988. j) Applications for scholarship grants and other necessary forms may be obtained by writing directly to the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc., 709 Brighton Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15233, or by contacting your local Branch Coordinator.
