Wukovits, Sr. Postmaster: If undelivered, please send form 3579 to: William Penn Association 709 Brighton Road Pittsburgh, PA 15233 Niki "We are calling on all our members to help Niki and her family,” said National Secretary E. E. Vargo. "The William Penn Association is committed to assisting those in need, and we are pleased with the way our members have responded to this appeal.” The Association has established a special fund at its Home Office to collect contributions from members. Members should send their donations to: William Penn Association Niki Fund, 709 Brighton Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15233. Some members of Pittsburgh’s Hungarian community have contributed more than money to Niki’s cause. For more than a month, volunteers have been visiting the hospital around the clock, spending time with Niki and helping her cope with the seemingly endless medical attention. If you would like to help Niki and her family, send your donations payable to: WILLIAM PENN ASSOCIATION NIKI FUND 709 Brighton Road Pittsburgh, PA 15233 "She’s a very bright little girl,” said Home Office employee Maria Bistey, one of those volunteering their spare time at the hospital. "But she often becomes tired from all the medications. "Sometimes she becomes frightened — all the medical attention, and not understanding English. She often calls for her father,” Bistey said. Niki’s father, Kont, left his wife and two sons behind in Hungary in order to be with Niki during her treatment in America. He literally lives in the hospital so that he can comfort Niki whenever she needs him. Volunteers from the Hungarian community spend much time with the father, offering him reassurance, companionship and relief from his vigil at his daughter’s bedside. "The William Penn is ever thankful to the volunteers who have supported this cause by providing relief to Niki’s father. They have truly acted in the fraternal spirit,” Mr. Vargo said. Niki and her father began their journey to America nearly a year-------From Page 1 ago after doctors in Hungary diagnosed Niki as having a rare liver disease. The disease, primary sclerosing cholangitis, is an inflammation of the bile ducts in the liver that does not allow a normal flow of blood and causes the liver to fail. Doctors at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia confirmed the diagnosis and suggested that Niki come to Philadelphia for further examination. The trip to America was necessary since liver transplants are not performed in Hungary and no doctor there has treated the disease afflicting Niki. Through the efforts of her uncle, Thomas Pecsvarady of Middletown Township, N.J., funds were raised and arrangements made for Niki and her father to come to America. After medications and other treatments failed, doctors decided a transplant was necessary. New Jersey branches seek sponsors for dinner-dance The New Jersey branches 13, 16, 19, 22, 51 and 70 of the William Penn Association, in conjunction with the Gala Dinner Dance to be held on April 16, 1988, at the Hungarian American Athletic Club in New Brunswick, are sponsoring an Advertising Journal. The proceeds of this journal will enable the New Jersey branches to continue meeting the many charitable needs that exist in our area. We need your support to help meet the cries of the poor, the sick, our troubled families, our beloved senior citizens and of course, our most prized possession, our youth. This is what fratemalism is all about. We ask you to consider placing an ad in our journal, based on your current means. This is our first appeal in many years, and there are many who want help in some way. That’s all we ask — that you help in some way — as best you can. Ad rates are $100/full-page, $50/half-page, $35/ quarter-page and $5/sponsor listing. To place an ad in our journal, send your name, firm, adddress, phone, and size of ad along with cameraready artwork or information you wish to be placed in your ad. Send your order with your check payable to "William Penn Association”, to: State of New Jersey William Perm Branches, P.O. Box 438, New Brunswick, N.J. 08903. Submission deadline for all ads is March 31, 1988. Williom Penn Home News Our new advertising pamphlets are going fast. Out of an original 1000, we have only 250 left, which means we will soon be reprinting. If you haven’t received your copy, please write to Paul Kovács, Administrator. Our Home continues to have full occupancy with a current waiting list. Continuous remodeling and renovating increases the efficiency and appearance of our Home and adds to the comfort of our beloved Residents. With the aid of our Home Office staff and administration, our Home has received a new computer and data processing system. This system will not only contain the medical histories and billing information for our residents, but will also revise our accounting system, easing the paperwork burden of our administrative staff. The administration of the Home Office also announces the leasing of the Home’s farm property to a nearby farmer who will be raising field corn and hay and tending cattle while maintaining and caring for the grounds - all at no expense to our Association. Our Retreat House and Camp Lodge with in-ground swimming pool are ready and available to serve our Association’s branches and organizations this spring and summer. We already have a number of activities scheduled, including a visit from Kalman Magyar’s Hungarian dance group for the week of July 10 to 17.
