Branch 15 Chicago, IL By Frank Balogh Branch 15 President Eva Laczina is a young member of our branch who recently celebrated her 16th birthday. Eva represented Hungary at the International Fair at Kelvin Park High School, displaying artifacts, embroideries, pictures and maps. Our branch is very proud of our junior member. She was first in her school among 450 students. In mathematics and history she has won 600 points. She speaks fluent Hungarian and also writes and reads the language. This is the reason she got a trip to visit her grandparents in Hungary this summer. We wish Eva and her father a fun and safe trip. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Helen Kaluczky Branch 28 Reporter We had an enjoyable branch meeting and bacon fry at President Steve Sandor’s home on June 21. Irene Nemeth thanked Steve Novak and his wife for their assistance at the election of delegates. She also thanked Kathy Novak for taking and transcribing the minutes of the election. She did a superb job. After the meeting, out came the good bacon and other refreshments. Thanks again to Steve and Peg Sándor for your gracious hospitality. Our next meeting will probably be in late September as the summer is quite filled already with all kinds of community events plus the fact that the convention is in September. Our trip to Wellsburg, W.Va., on June 28 was just right. Under cool blue skies, "András” gave us coffee and donuts when we arrived at Mount St. George that morning. Afterwards, we toured the grounds and then Father Becker rang the bell for Mass. God bless Father Becker — celebrating 60 years as a priest on June 14, and there he was in that beautiful chapel, ready to fulfill another Sunday liturgy for us. After Mass we toured some more of the Mansion under the guidance of Mrs. Meyers. The past comes alive when you hear it from her lips. Our only regret about the whole day was that the tour was on a Sunday. If the tour had been on a weekday, perhaps it could have included a short stop at one of the excellent potteries nearby. Here’s an idea. Apart from the historical buildings at Mount St. George, a separate gift and coffee house should be built and an agreement reached with local potteries to display and sell their handiwork as well as that of Marianna Halassy. Thus, you would give everyone an opportunity and keep a sort of "trade balance” between American and Hungarian. Get well wishes go out to Bill Matasy who became a part of the knee surgery club along with Margaret Ince, Dorothy Krusely and many others. No more kicking the old football around, Bill. Those Newberry College days are gone forever. We wish everyone a happy and healthy summer. See you at the picnics and at the American-Hungarian Club’s Heritage Day on Donald Avenue Sept. 20. Meantime, be sure to keep the William Penn in mind for your insurance needs. Call Gabe Nameth, Branch 28 coordinator, at (216) 782-8145. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Harold Robinson Branch 800 Reporter Branch 800 helds its regular meeting on May 4. We made final plans for the bus trip to the Fatima Blue Army Shrine at Washington, N.J. on June 13. We also planned our other activities for the summer. After the meeting a special election was held to elect delegates to the national convention. Those elected were Leo Long and Charles Matko. Alternate delegates were Leroy Douglas and Edward Dzielski. The trip to the Fatima Shrine was a great success. We had a full bus load of 48 people. A great time was had by all by participating in the Mass held at the Shrine with Bernard Cardinal Law of Boston as celebrant. We also took part in the procession honoring the Virgin Mary and visiting other buildings at the Shrine. Don’t forget — Branch 800 will hold our annual corn boil and wiener roast at Highland Park in Altoona on Aug. 19. This is always a joyful event. Branch 8036 Greensburg, PA Branch 8036 met May 25 at St. John’s Church to complete final plans for the altar boy program to be held at St. Joseph’s. The branch also placed an ad in the anniversary booklet at St. Joseph’s. Branch 8050 Pittsburgh, PA By Edward Haberman Branch 8050 President Branch 8050 sponsored May 17 a recognition program for the altar boys and children’s choir members of All Saints Church. This is probably one of the greatest fraternal programs a W illiam Penn branch could possibly have. It involves the youth of today, honoring them for their achievements in life. During the noon Mass that day, the altar boys who recently began their service to the church received certificates of enrollment from the Association. At the end of the Mass, eighth graders who will be leaving the choir received certificates of recognition for their services. We have a wonderful 35-member choir of boys and girls from the third to eighth grades directed by church organist Michael Stypula. Later on, everyone went to the activities building for a light snack. We also honored the children with gifts of this honorable occasion as a rememberance. Next year our Branch 8050 plans to honor Mr. Stypula with a citation award for his achievements in our Parish. Besides directing the children’s choir, he directs our Folk Mass choir and teaches music in our school. Branch 8075 Wilkes-Barre, PA Members of Branch 8075 met June 16 to discuss their participation in the local German American Day Celebration to be held this summer. The members also discussed a program concerning illiteracy in adults. Branch 8095 Uniontown, PA Branch 8095 members discussed their upcoming picnic at their July meeting. The picnic will be held Aug. 9. About 30 members plan to attend, and entertainment will be provided. Branch 8114 Clarion, PA At the June 16 meeting of Branch 8114, Branch President Robert Walter announced that the parish picnic will be held Sunday, Aug. 16. All members were asked to help with this event, as they have in the past. Branch 8321 Windber, PA The members of Branch 8321 met May 31 at St. Anthony’s Church in Windber, Pa. Among the items discussed at the meeting were the Bishop’s ordination ceremony and work on the bell at St. Anthony’s cemetery. There was no branch meeting scheduled for June. Branch 8326 Smithton, PA The members of Branch 8326 gathered June 14 at Inn America to hold a Mother’s/Father’s Day buffet. Special honorees for the day were Gertrude Sofran and Helen Kundrat. 2nd Annual William Penn Association Branch 14 Day at Geauga Lake Sunday, August 16,1987 Send Tickets to: Name:__________________________________________________________ Address:_______________________________________________________ Phone:_________________________________________________________ No. juvenile members___________ Free Admission No. adult members_________X $4.00 = $___________ No. non-members_________ X $8.00 =__________ TOTAL = $__________ Send form and check payable to William Penn Association to: Dawn Ward, 16363 Pearl Road, Strongsville, OH 44136 Deadline for Reservations — Aug. 7
