Page 4, William Penn Life, June 1987 Fraternalist---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------From Page 1 messages from Gov. Richard Casey and U.S. Senators John Heinz and Arien Specter. During the evenings principal address, Justice Rolf Larsen of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court praised President Banes for his steadfastness to the ideals of fraternalism. "Too often we become lazy and do not attend to our fraternal affairs,” Justice Larsen said. "I applaud Gay and Mrs. Banes for the way they continue working in this fraternal concept.” Following Justice Larsen’s remarks, Bernard Rogalski, president of the Polish Falcons of America, presented Mr. Banes the Fraternalist of the Y ear award. The entire audience gave President Banes a standing ovation. His voice slightly choked with the emotion of the moment, Mr. Banes thanked the FSGP for bestowing upon him the award and he thanked all those who attended the banquet held in his honor. He also urged the members of the audience to continue the fight to "save and preserve for generations to come” the spirit of fraternalism. The evening’s most touching moment did not appear in the written banquet program. After the presentation of the Fraternalist award, National Vice President Albert Stelkovics stepped up to the podium to make a surprise presentation. He gave Mr. Banes a gold chain and gold medallion, a gift from the Association’s official family. The two men embraced as the audience offered another rousing ovation. Many of the banquets distinguished guests gathered for a special reception prior to the awards dinner. Among those at the reception were Congressman William Coyne, Justice Larsen, Judge Leonard Staisey, Commissioner Foerster, members of the Association’s official family and leaders of the various fraternal societies located in the Pittsburgh area. Following the banquet program, a number of guests stayed for a special performance by the Magyar Folk Dancers of McKeesport, Pa. The group’s colorful costumes and lively dancing added to the festive mood of the evening. In all, many words pf praise were spoken about President Banes. The Rev. Nicholas Dengl, managing editor of the Catholic Hungarian Sunday, said Mr. Banes "possesses the characterics of the young, sometimes more than the young themselves.” William Wenger of the National Fraternal Congress of America noted that President Banes has done much to further the aims of the entire fraternal benefit system. But the simplest and perhaps greatest tribute was paid by Mr. Petrus when he said, "I learned a lot from this man.” Allegheny County (Pa.) Commissioner Thomas Foerster presented President Banes with a proclamation establishing April 25, 1987 as Gay B. Banes Day in the county. Joining President Banes at the special pre-dinner reception are (from left) Paul Kovács Sr., director of the Bethlen Home; National Director Elmer Toth; William Szuch, retired vice president of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America; George Dózsa, a member of the HRFA Board of Directors; August Molnár, president of the American Hungarian Foundation; and National Secretary E.
