Page 4, William Penn Life, May 1987 Michigan prepares to host golf tournament By Barbara B. Botkin National Director PITTSBURGH - The Fourth Annual William Penn National Golf Tournament is planned for Saturday, July 11, at the Raisin River Golf Club - West Course in Monroe, Mich. The tournament festivities promise to make for a great getaway weekend for William Penn golfers, their spouses and friends. This year, golf participants will have the option of playing in either a regular handicap division or in the Calloway handicap division. Golfers who would like to use their established handicaps from their home golf courses must submit them with their tournament application, along with verification of either their golf club professional or another person authorized to verify handicaps at the golf club. Only those persons submitting handicaps with proper verification will be eligible to play in the regular handicap event. The Calloway division will be scored by eliminating the last two holes of play and limiting the maximum allowable score on any hole to be double the par for that hole. For example, on a par five hole, the maximum allowable score will be 10. However, all actual scores must be recorded on the score card as usual. Senior men age 55 and over will vie for separate skill shot prizes this year. These will include longest drive, longest putt, closest to the pin and closest to the line. There will continue to be a separate women’s division which will include low gross, low net and skill shots. Trophies will be awarded to the first and second place winners in each division. There will also be more than 100 other prizes awarded to players producing the lowest net scores. The evening’s festivities will once again feature PGA pro Les Botkin conducting the auction raffle of a golf bag and set of clubs. Entry fee for the tournament is $30.00 for William Penn members and $35.00 for non-members. The fee includes greens fees, carts, a golf gift on #1 tee and lunch and snacks on the course. Hotel accomodations are at the Presidential Inn in Southgate, Mich, 20 minutes from the golf course. Rooms are $57.00 a night for single or double occupancy. The Inn has beautiful rooms, a fine restaurant and a relaxing swimming pool. On Friday, July 10, a hospitality room will be staffed in the Inn from 2 to 9 p.m. There you may enjoy some light snacks and pick up some brochures on things to do and see in the Detroit area. Golfers may play the Raisin River course on Friday if they wish. There is also twilight play available to couples on Friday evening. Between the hours of 6 and 9 p.m. on Friday, you are cordially invited to dine at the William Penn Club in Lincoln Park, just five minutes from the hotel. In addition to dinner, the William Penn Club will feature live musical entertainment and two golf films, including "Highlights of the 1985 Masters Tournament,” and a "Golf Clinic” by three PGA professionals. Saturday’s play will begin with an 8 a.m. tee-off. Capping the weekend’s events will be the golf awards banquet at the Portside Inn. Cocktail hour begins at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7:30 p.m. Each banquet guest will receive a favor and is eligible to receive door prizes. The banquet is limited to 200 persons this year, so you must get your reservations in early. No reservations will be accepted after the June 11 deadline. The 1987 Tournament Committee is headed by Administrators Barbara and Les Botkin and Stephen G. Danko. Other committee members are Andrew Toth, Stephen P. Danko, Bill Papp, Joe Nemeth and Steve Varga. Any other Detroit area members who are interested in being a member of this year’s golf committee should contact Barbara Botkin, 2438 Botkin Place, McKeesport, Pa. 15135. The William Penn National Golf Tournament has become one of the Association’s most popular and successful fraternal activities.
