April 1987, William Penn Life, Page 5 44th Notional Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days Toledo ready to greet William Penn bowlers TOLEDO — With the 44th National Bowling Tournament a little more than month away, members at Branch 27 are busy finalizing the last details for the event. Tournament Administrator and National Director Stephen J. Ivancso recently released many of those details, including the announcement of additional entertainment at the tournament banquet. Frank Borisz and his Continental Orchestra from Cleveland will be providing music for dancing following the dinner. The orhcestra has gained a wide following throughout the region and is a popular attraction at many ethnic affairs. The banquet will also feature a performance by the Branch 18 Hungarian Dancers from Detroit. The Branch 18 troupe, under the direction of Darlene Szatmári, has delighted audiences at many William Penn activities. These performers will join Hungarian opera singers Magda Kalmar and Demeter Marczis and pianist István Gyarmati on the banquet program. The star of the banquet, however, may be the dinner menu. The family-style, homemade meal will offer a variety of traditional Hungarian cuisine, including chicken paprikas, kolbász, dumplings, and Hungarian pastries. Beer, wine, liquor and soft drinks will be available at a cash bar. The banquet will be held Saturday, May 23, at St. Stephen’s Church Social Hall. Bus transportation between the Hotel Sofitel (headquarters for this year’s tournament) and the hall will be provided. St. Stephen’s hall will also serve as the site for a special bowlers’ hospitality room on Friday, May 22. The hospitality room will feature refreshments and will be open from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Mr. Ivancso said it may stay open, later if business warrants it. The bowling events will begin Saturday morning with men’s and women’s team competition. Sunday’s action will see the men’s and women’s singles and doubles events. The tournament will be held at Ducat’s Imperial Lanes, 5505 West Central Ave. Ducat’s has gained recognition amongst serious bowlers as a frequent host of the PBA. Once again, bus service will be provided between the Hotel Sofitel and the bowling lanes. The tournament weekend will also feature the annual meeting of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc. and the Louis L. Varga Scholars Guild. The meeting will be held Friday, May 22, beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the hotel. (See related notice and financial statement below.) In addition to the many activities connected to the tournament, ithe city of Toledo offers a wide range of leisure and entertainment options to make your stay more enjoyable. The Hotel Sofitel is located next to the Portside commercial and retail development. Exploring Portside itself could fill your day.
