Toledo tournament offers more than just bowling and meetings March 1987, William Penn'Life, Page 5 TOLEDO — Members attending the WPA 44th National Bowling Tournament here May 22 to 24 will have more to look forward to than the bowling competition. First, they will have the oppor­tunity to experience the sights and sounds of Toledo, an emerg­ing center of growth and progress which has become an increasingly popular destination for business, entertainment and visitors. Secondly, the Home Office re­cently announced that renowned Hungarian opera singers Magda Kalmar and Demeter Marczis, accompanied by pianist István Gyarmati, will be the featured entertainment at the tournament banquet. Plus, the annual "Holy Toledo — It’s Spring Celebration” and the Toledo International Grand Prix Hydroplane Races will be in full swing while our bowlers are in Toledo. Toledo enjoys an exclusive new downtown festival marketplace and four major shopping malls, ethnic and international restaur­ants, new office complexes and a new spirit. Portside Festival Marketplace, located downtown on the banks of the Maumee River, is a collec­tion of wonderful shops featuring everything from vintage wines and deli items to fine clothing, Fraternal communicators hold mid-year conference NEW ORLEANS — About 75 fraternal directors and communi­cators from several dozen fraternal societies gathered here Feb. 22 to 24 for the National Fraternal Congress of America Fraternal and Communications Sections Mid-Year Meeting. The meeting offered the fráter­­nalists the opportunity to share information on designing and promoting benevolent projects on national and branch levels. As a Branch Coordinator you will assist the branch officers in fraternal activities, conduct all business between the Home Office and the Branch and file annually in January with the Home Office a fraternal activities report covering the operations of the Branch for the previous year. You will also be responsible for maintaining records on the branch membership and assisting branch members, and be authorized to enroll new members. Mr. Ivancso’s branch, Branch 27, Toledo, is hosting the tournament. There are also night clubs and cabarets which make the city of very exciting place to be when the sun goes down. But you won’t even have to leave the Hotel Sofitel, the head­quarters for the tournament, to find first-rate entertainment. Magda Kalmar, Demeter Marc­zis and István Gyarmati give per­formances which have enthralled audiences around the globe. Magda Kalmar, a native of Budapest and Liszt Award artist, has won wide-spread acclaim and the Academy of France’s Grand Prize for her recordings of Vivaldi and Handel. She is also noted for her beautiful renditions of Hung­arian folk songs. Another Liszt Award artist, Demeter Marczis, a native of Ostoros, is a member of the Pecs National Theater and former win­ner of the Academy Song Festival. He has performed at Budapest’s opera house and in opera houses around the world. He regularly performs Hungarian folk songs on television and radio. Pianist István Gyarmati has been the accompanist of the Hun­garian Philharmonia since 1967. He has earned a reputation in Europe as an outstanding perfor­mer of classical and light music. The group also received an update on the current status of the proposed U.S. Treasury De­partment audit of the seven largest fraternal societies. Bill Heerman, NFCA vice pres­ident and law committee member, told the fraternalists that it is now more of a question of when, not if, the Treasury will perform the audits. The results of the audits will play a large roll in determing whether fraternal societies will maintain their tax-exempt status.
