Branches to hold annual elections PITTSBURGH — The Home Office wishes to officially notify our members and branches of two important events they should be planning for this December: the election of branch officers and the family Christmas party. The By-Laws of the William Penn Association (Article VI, Section 606) provide that "the election of branch officers shall be held at the annual branch meeting in December. "Elections shall be by secret ballot. Each adult life benefit member in good standing shall have one vote for each office. "Elections shall be by a majority of those present at the annual meeting. Officers elected at the annual meeting shall be installed immediately.” The Association invites all life benefit members to attend their local branch meeting and take an active part in the affairs of their branch. Association officials agree that, with everyone cooperating, we can continue to promote our heritage and culture along with supporting our benevolent, charitable and fraternal work. Among the most enjoyable tasks our branches perform each year are planning and hosting annual family Christmas parties. The Board of Directors has once again authorized family Christmas party support for those branches holding such parties. So that your branch may be among those to arrange a Christmas party, all members are being urged to attend their branch meetings and help formulate plans for a successful Christmas party. Member enjoys role in recent TV movie NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Michael Novack, better known to New Jersey members as Michael Hegedűs, co-starred in the CBS movie, "Angel in Green”, which aired Sept. 22 nationwide. Michael is the son of Advisory Board member Michael and Barbara Hegedűs. A member of Branch 19 and a resident of Burbank, Calif., the younger Michael co-stars as one of a group of Green Berets who come to the aid of islanders and missionaries in the South Pacific who are being threatened by violent guerillas attempting to take control of the island by force. Although it contains some violence, the film "is really a love story and a story about learning how to defend one’s rights when being attacked,” Michael said. A native of New Brunswick, Michael spent several years in New York learning his craft, pounding the pavement, doing dinner theatre and summer stock and getting an occasional role on a soap opera or commercial. The film stars Bruce Boxleitner and Susan Dey. "Box and Susan are true professionals and honestly the nicest people you’d want to work with for six weeks, six days a week, up to 14 hours a day on a tiny island in the South Pacific,” Michael said. "And Marvin (Chomsky) our director (Roots, Holocaust, Rich Man/Poor Man) was a creator, D.I., friend, pulse of the work. I miss his wit.” The members of Branch 19 and other New Jersey branches are especially proud of Michael and shall be looking for a repeat of the movie, "Angel in Green.” Look for it in your local TV listings. If we know in advance, we shall notify you in the William Penn Life. Michael’s parents have been great fraternalists for many years. Mr. Hegedűs is a former president of Branch 19 and has served as a national auditor and national director. Mrs. Hegedűs has served the branch in many capacities and has been branch secretary for the last 20 years. Next Deadline November 20 By John E. Lovász Managing Editor LIGONIER, PA — The Association’s 100th Anniversary commemorative coin is more than a momento of our Centennial celebration. Its design symbolizes the ideals to which our members have been dedicated since the society was founded in 1886: love of God, country, heritage and our fellow man. These ideals are shared by the man who designed the coin, Joseph Kolozi. They are ideals he has brought to life during more than 55 years as a painter, woodcarver and engraver. Mr. Kolozi, a member of Branch 89 Homestead, Pa., was born on July 27, 1912, in Miscolc, Hungary. While still a young child, he emigrated to the United States and was raised by his grandparents in the Pittsburgh area. It was while he was living with his grandparents that his interest in art and his Hungarian heritage began to develop. "My grandparents spoke only Hungarian in their house. They were very Magyar. So, naturally, the Hungarian language and traditions were a large part of my life,” he said. His grandmother’s kitchen and garden also provided him with some of his first artistic media and subjects. "I started painting floral designs on dishes using the flowers in her garden as models,” Mr. Kolozi said. Although he enjoyed painting flowers, his greatest interest was in figures. It was this preference for the human form that led to the incident which would begin his serious pursuit of a career in art. "In high school, we were required to create certain types of work, like drawing flowers and making posters,” he explains. "I didn’t particularly like that, so I would draw off those assignments quickly, sit back and start sketching the kids in school. ---------------See 'Kolozi’ Page 2
