Branch News October 1987, William Penn Life, Page 9 Mo and Cindy Dervie, along with their children, take a break from the 90-degree heat during Branch 14’s annual picnic at Geauga Lake Park. Still happily married after 50 years are Mr. and Mrs. Steve Katko of Branch 19 New Brunswick, N.J. Branch 15 members Mr. and Mrs. William K. Feifar celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married July 4, 1937. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH It has been a busy summer for the branch. Branch 14 scholarship recipients and their parents were honored at a dinner at the Spanish Tavern restaurant on Aug. 15. This is the third year the branch has sponsored the scholarship dinner, and once again we were honored with the presence of National Secretary E. E. Vargo who made a speech and presented the scholarship checks. Mr. Vargo remarked how lucky the organization is to have such quality young people and how we expect these same young people to "carry the torch” of William Penn in the future. He also commended the branch for organizing such a nice affair. Branch 14 held its second annual picnic at Geauga Lake park on Aug. 16. We were blessed with beautiful weather and more than 100 children attended for a fun-filled and exciting day. Four of our members represented our branch at the 31st General Convention. They were Stan Dorulla, Emma Oris, Richard Sarosi and Rose Kaul. We thank them for their dedication in performing this important function. Plan now to attend the second annual Branch 14 dinner-dance on Saturday, Oct. 10, at St. John’s Byzantine Church in Solon. Hungarian music, courtesy of Frank Borisz, will be played and the food will be delicious. Call Vi Sarosi at (216) 248-9012 for information and reservations. Branch 15 Chicago, IL By Frank Balogh Branch 15 President William Feifar and his dear wife, Julia, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 11 among many friends and William Penn members of Branch 15. William is our branch’s vice president. He has always assisted in branch activities and was a delegate to the 31st General Convention in Toronto. Our friends, William and Julia, have two sons from this happy marriage, William and Richard, and two grandchildren, William Ben and Sherlie. Our branch’s other delegate to the Convention was Branch President Frank Balogh. He has taken to heart the Association’s renewed effort to enroll new young members. He proved that at the Convention when he turned over seven juvenile applications to National President Stephen G. Danko. Our seven new young members are Bridget Louise Balogh, Amy Elizabeth Balogh, Amber Rose Balogh, Katherine Rose Balogh, Jenő B. Katona Jr., László G. Katona and Nicoletta Hary. We are pleased to welcome them into our fraternal family. Branch 19 New Brunswick, NJ By Ruth Vasvary Branch 19 Vice President We get so busy sometimes that we have a tendency to forget the truly important things in life. Just in case any of us have forgotten, here’s something that may help us remember: Let Us Remember The value of time The success of perserverance The pleasure of working The dignity of simplicity The worth of character The power of kindness The influence of example The obligation of duty The wisdom of economy The virtue of patience The improvement of talent The joy of originating (Author unknown) Our branch meetings are held the first Monday of each month at the Bayard Street Presbyterian Church Hall in New Brunswick at 7 p.m. Support your branch. Come join us. Branch 22 Roebling, NJ By Barbara A. Emri Branch 22 Secretary Dale Cole, a 10-year veteran of the Pemberton Township Police Dept., was recently sworn in as chief-of-police in Pemberton Borough, N.J. Chief Cole, a lifelong resident of the area and former borough dweller, now resides in Florence, N.J. with his wife, the former Nancy Emri, and their two children, Scott and Sarah. He has served as a military police officer in the Army and has been both a patrol officer and a detective. He graduated from the Burlington County Police Academy and attended Burlington County College. Chief Cole will direct the activities of all full-time and supplementary part-time officers. In addition to his administrative duties as chief, he will also take part in patrol activities. Dale has been an auditor of Branch 22 for four years, and more recently the vice president for the past four years. He has been very instrumental in all phases of our fraternal activities, especially in bringing in new members. At the recent General Convention he was elected to the National Auditing Committee. At this time we would like to congratulate National President Stephen G. Danko and all the new officers, Board members and auditors. Of course, a special congratulation to Zoltán B. Emri, the new national vice president, and the first national officer from New Jersey. We now resume our monthly branch meetings after the summer vacation, and welcome all members to attend the fourth Tuesday of every month (unless otherwise notified). We always have the William Penn cookbooks on hand for sale. Please call one of our officers if you are interested. They make very fine gifts, and are really useful for the upcoming holiday season. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Helen Kaluczky Branch 28 Reporter The various "fests” and fairs have been wonderful to attend. Some of our members took in the Ohiofest at the Eastwood Mall at which our own nephew, Bob Matasy, played. His polka band has a following that you see everywhere he plays, plus you get a chance to see his grandmother, Helen Matasy, brother, Albert Jr., and father, Albert Matasy who sits on so many community boards and always offers his services at community events. It is always good to see Bob on "Polkatown” on cable channel 12, as well as the Zolka Bros. They can play a mean csárdás, too. At the Canfield Fair there were all the international booths. The Hungarians were well represented with the cymbalom and violin, as well as Larry Santha’s daughterin-law with her display of Indian jewelry. The annual Hungarian Heritage Day Celebration, sponsored by the Y oungstown American-Hungarian Club, was held on Sept. 20. They were very busy baking and getting the grounds in shape, and were hoping for as good a turnout as last year. The American Hungarian Reformed Church started their season with a Swiss Steak dinner on Sept. 20. They will sponsor another dinner this month. If you want to go, please call them to make reservations. Happy birthday greetings to David George of Branch 129 Columbus who was 82 years young in September. He has been a good friend of our own Branch 28. David, may you have many more years of good works with the William Penn Association. Best regards to all those other Convention delegates who made the 31st General Convention a success. I must say that I really enjoyed the three days off from cooking while my husband John was at the Convention. It took me two days to get him back to normalcy after all that good food in Toronto. Our Hungarian community was terribly moved by the sudden death of Leslie Wash Jr. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his father, Leslie Sr., and to the whole family. May you all be consoled by our Lord’s loving care. Leslie Sr. has been Branch 28 secretary-treasurer for a long time. We remember how his wife, Ann, filled that position so faithfully until her death. May they rest in peace. For all your insurance needs, please call Branch Coordinator Gabe Nameth at (216) 782-8145. Get that juvenile coverage for your children and granchildren now while our centennial offer is still in effect. It’s a wonderful opportunity to get inexpensive life insurance for your loved ones. Branch 51 Passaic, NJ By Ernest Mozer Branch 51 Coordinator With the passing of summer and the beginning of fall, it is hard to believe that winter will be here soon. Our branch is in the process of making plans for its annual election of officers and the annual Family Christmas Party. Both events will be held on Sunday, Dec. 6, at the American- Hungarian Citizens Club, 21 New Schley St., Garfield, N.J. The election of officers will be held at 2 p.m., and the party will begin at 3 p.m. promptly. There will be entertainment, refreshments and a visit from our good friend Santa. The branch is asking all children to bring their parents, grandparents and cousins to the Christmas party. Like we said, it’s a family Christmas party. Anyone needing directions to the club should call (201) 471- 9852 after 6 p.m. On behalf of our branch officers and members, we wish to congratulate our newly elected national officers. May they lead the William Penn Association to greater glories in the next 100 years of its existence.
