St. Stephen honored in U.S. and Hungary St. Stephen, a descendant of Arpad, was the first great Christian king of Hungary. He wanted to found communities for the wandering tribes of Hungarian people in order that they could live near churches. St. Stephen is considered the founder of the Hungarian nation. In 1000 A.D. in Esztergom, he was crowned the first king of Hungary. He was canonized in 1087. The beautiful crown of St. Stephen was presented to him by Pope Sylvester II. All kings of Hungary were crowned with this crown, a symbol of Hungarian royalty and Hungary’s connection with the Western world which embraced Christianity. The crown was removed and held for many years by people in the West who did not feel that invaders of the country had the right to possess this symbol. The crown was recently returned to Hungary by the United States. The crown is viewed today as an historical treasure, reminding those who see it of Hungary’s Christian heritage. Recently, a rock opera called "István Király” was written and produced by the young people of Hungary. American-Hungarians still celebrate St. Stephen’s Day in the month of August. This is the reason why many of our Magyar Nap picnics are held around St. Stephen’s Day. Hungarian churches throughout the U.S. have been named after the famous king. Photographs, wood carvings and statuary of the king and his crown are located in many Hungarian communities. One of the largest statues is located in Youngstown, Ohio. The statue is flanked by the original county crests of pre-war Hungary. A special pilgrimage occurs each year to commemorate the Patron of the Franciscan Province in Transylvania. This year the pilgrimage will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13. For more information about the pilgrimage call (216) 799- 1888, or Elizabeth Szabó at (412) 231-2979.
