Page 12, November-December 1986, William Penn Life BRANCH NEWS Br. 800 Holds Corn Boil By Harold Robinson Branch 800 Reporter BLAIR COUNTY, PA - On Wednesday, Aug. 13, Branch 800 held its annual Corn Boil and Weiner Roast at Highland Park in Altoona, Pa. There were 100 adults and 35 children attending the picnic. Among those in attend­ance were National President Gay B. Banes and Executive Vice President John F. Kenawell. President Banes gave a talk on getting more young people involved in the Association, noting that we need more young members or we will die out. The highlight of the day came when President Banes presented scholarships to Michael Keith and Sandra and Karen Matko. The day also featured plenty of corn and hot dogs for every­oneand games for the children. The branch thanks the com­­mittee that planned and worked on this project and cooked and served the corn and hot dogs. Branch 800 also recently gave an award of $25 to Christopher T oomey for earn­­ing the highest marks in relig­ion in his senior year. The branch grants the award yearly. Christopher was graduated from Bishop Guilfoil High. South Bend Club Ends Annual Drive SOUTH BEND, IN - The members of the South Bend William Penn Club joined together Nov. 29 for the annual private free club membership dinner. The dinner dance marked the end of the club’s annual membership drive. Results of the drive were not available at press time, but club leaders were hoping for a successful drive. Music for the dinner dance was provided by the Seasons Orchestra. This same group performed at the club’s Chick­en and Pork Dinner Dance held Oct. 4. The October dinner dance, which was sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary, featured Hungarian style breaded chick­en, homemade sausage, hurka and pastries. The club also recently re­leased the names of the winners of the annual Home­coming Picnic raffle held Aug. 2. The winners were: Bruce Ehardt, first prize; Mary Mezzei, second; Steve Bacsa, third; Pat Sziver, fourth; and Joe Kovács, fifth. The club is currently finalizing plans for its annual children’s Christmas party to be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. Present at the anniversary dinner were National Presi­dent Gay B. Banes, Executive Vice President John F. Kenawell, National Secretary E.E. Vargo, Pittsburgh District Chairman Joseph Schmidt, Sister Maria Goretti, admin­istrator of the Center, Sister Colman, assistant administra­­tor, and Father Richard Wersing, branch spiritual ad­visor.
