In Memóriám Joseph Toma, Advisory Board It is with great sorrow that we report the death of Advisory Board member Joseph Toma, who died July 13, 1986, in Flushing Hospital, Flushing, N.Y., following a long illness. He was 77. One of the most beloved members of our Association, Mr. Toma diligently served the William Penn in a number of capacities over many years. He began his career with the William Penn as a salesman and, even as a national director, continued to list his principal occupation as “selling and teaching life insurance.” In 1938 he became a branch manager and assistant district manager in the New York City area. From there he earned numerous promotions to district manager, regional manager, supervisor of agencies, and, finally, field supervisor. He was first elected to the Board of Directors in 1963 and continued to serve as a director until the end of 1983. On Jan. 1, 1984, he assumed a seat on the Association’s Advisory Board. “Joseph Toma was a director who never failed to advise our Board in the best interest of the membership,” said his longtime associate, John T. Lesko, vice chairman of the Board of Directors. “He took life seriously but Joseph Toma had a way about him that would find the lighter side of life,” Mr. Lesko said. Mr. Lesko was among a number of members of the official family who attended funeral services for Mr. Toma, held July 15 at the Quinn Funeral Home in Flushing. Also representing the Association were National Directors Joseph Arvay and Frank J. Radvany, Advisory Board members Frank Bero and Frank J. Wukovits Sr. and Auditing Committee member Charles Fabian. Mr. Toma was born Jan. 30,1909 in New York City. He was a graduate of the City College of New York and member of St. Stephen Catholic Church of Hungary. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife, Sylvia, and his son, Richard. We shall miss Joseph Toma, but we shall never forget him. DANIEL M. ZORNAN Fraternalists across the nation were saddened by the recent death of Daniel M. Zornan, president of the United Lutheran Society. He was 60. Mr. Zornan began his career with United Lutheran in 1953 as executive secretary. In 1969 he was elected president and served in that office until his death. His work in the fraternal benefit system extended well beyond his own society. He served on the board of directors of the National Fraternal Congress of America and was membership chairman and resolutions committee chairman of the NFCA. He also was past president of the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh, the Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress and the President’s Section of the NFCA. In April of this year, he was named the Fraternalist of the Year by the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh. In 1984, he received the John Jordan Upchurch Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress. A native of Akron, Ohio, Mr. Zornan is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife, Mildred Blistan Zornan, and three daughters, Patricia and Carol Zornan and Mrs. Mark (Kathy) Caliendo. Services were held at St. James Lutheran Church in Ligonier, Pa. Representing the Association were National President Gay B. Banes, National Secretary E. E. “AI” Vargo, Executive Vice President John F. Kenawell, National Vice President William Penn Life, September-October 1986, Page 13 Albert J. Stelkovics and National Director William C. Kohut. ISADORE J. SPORNER The members of Branches 8121 and 8126, St. Marys, Pa., were saddened by the death of Isadore J. Sporner on April 27. Mr. Sporner was a past president of Branch 8121, holding that office for more than 25 years, and Served as a branch promoter. He also was the organizer of Branch 8126 and father of that branch’s current president, Mary Lou Sporner. Mr. Sporner joined the former Catholic Knights of St. George in 1916 and received many awards during his years as a promoter. MRS. JOHN ASHLEY The Association joins the members of Branch 28, Youngstown, Ohio, in extending its sympathy to the family of Mrs. John Ashley who died July 20. Mrs. Ashley was active in William Penn affairs and she will be sincerely missed. She is the daughter of the late Joseph Turner Sr. who was a very active officer up to the time of his death. NARTZ F. GAJEWSKI The Association extends its sympathy to the family of Nartz F. Gajewski, former administrator of the Mount St. George Home for the Elderly, who recently passed away. A resident of Nanticoke, Pa., Mr. Gajewski was the Home’s administrator from 1980 to 1984 when he retired. Prior to that he served as director of fraternal activities for the former Catholic Knights of St. George from 1974 to 1980. He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Gajewski. We ask our fellow members to pray for the eternal rest of Mr. Toma, Mr. Zornan, Mr. Sporner and Mrs. Ashley as well as for those recently departed members listed below.
