William Penn Life, September-October 1986, Page 5 --------------------------------------------------------------From Page 1 Golf friends of the Association mingled while enjoying homemade kolbász, cheeses and assorted Hungarian pastries. The colorful ethnic costumes worn by members of the Hungarian Ethnic Group of Western Pennsylvania, who served as hosts throughout the two-day event, helped generate the good spirits of guests as they walked in the door. By 8 p.m. that day, many were eager to begin the first official activity of the tournament, the putting contest. One by one, 92 guests took their place on the bright green putting carpet laid on the inn’s ballroom floor for the contest. Each contestant had three tries to putt a golf ball so that it stopped inside a small square representing a hole. After two hours, Buzz Kormos of Michigan won the contest and was awarded an umbrella by tournament administrators Les and Barbara Botkin. The next morning, Aug. 2, golfers began teeing off at the first hole of the Champion Lakes Golf Course in Bolivar, Pa., a short drive from the Lord Ligonier Inn. Each golfer received a complimentary William Penn Association Centennial golf ball made by Pinnacle before teeing off. As an indicator of how large the field of golfers was, the first foursome, hailing from Michigan, began play at 8:30 a.m., while the last golfers to tee off began at 1.15 p.m. At one point the entire course was occupied solely by William Penn golfers. Skies were overcast throughout the morning and a light sprinkle of rain waa felt, but play never was suspended and the skies Buzz Kormos of Michigan looks satisfied after winning the putting contest. The golf tournament's youngest player, 14-year-old Stephen Pastor“ of Missouri, takes his turn during the putting contest. cleared by mid-afternoon. Play continued into the early evening. But well before the last golfer returned to the club house, it was clear that Dave Wahl of Pittsburgh would win his third straight low gross score title. Mr. Wahl ended the day with a 2-over-par 73, eight strokes ahead of low gross runnersup J. Wilks and S. Shoulder. Men’s low net wining was, once again, the auction raffle for a $1,000 set of golf clubs and golf bag. Anticipation grew as each of the dozen or so contestants were eliminated. In the end it was Ernesf Rudak of Cleveland who took home the prize. As dinner guests filed out of the banquet hall, many could be heard asking about when and where the next tournament will be held. Ernest Hudak reacts with obvious joy at winning a $1,000 set of golf clubs and golf bag in the auction-raffle held at the golf tournament banquet. In women’s play, Marvis Snyder captured the low gross title with a 93. She also scored the low gross in last year’s tournament. Helen Francus finished second with a 104. Low net winner in the women’s division was Gloria Paolicelli with a 74 and runnerup was foursome-mate Hanna Bailey with a 75. (A complete list of winners appears in this issue). All the tournament winners received their prizes during the tournament banquet that evening at Jim Monzo’s Blue Angel Restaurant in nearby Latrobe, Pa. A total of 107 golf and door prizes were awarded following the banquet meal. The highlight of the evenNational Golf Tournament Results Men’s Division S. Linkes 73 Women’s Division Low Gross D.
