Page 4, September-October 1986, William Penn Life Carnival What pleased carnival organizers even more than the excellent weather was the large turnout of children. “I’d have to say that this is the largest turnout of children our Association has had at any of its events this year,” said Executive Vice President John F. Kenawell. “It’s heartening to see so many families here and enjoying themselves.” Several dozen children participated in about a half dozen games that had them literally running in circles, kicking off their shoes and digging through a pile of sand. And the kids seemed to love every minute of it. After the games the children, some of them grabbing their parents, climbed aboard a hay-covered wagon to enjoy one of the hayrides around the grounds. Other carnival-goers sought relief from the warm sun by taking one of three tours of the Home for the Elderly. It was a chance for them to see how funds raised at the carnival are used to help care for the aging members of the Association. In the latter part of the afternoon, everyone was put into an even more festive mood by the dancing of the Hungarian Ethnic Group of Western Pennsylvania. The crowd applauded often as the dancers whirled around in their ethnic costumes. The group closed its performance by coaxing several members of the audience to join them in one last dance. Net proceeds from the carnival to be donated to the Home have not been tabulated yet. But organizers say this year’s carnival drew about $7,000 in gross receipts. The success of the carnival is directly attributable to the diligent efforts of the numerous volunteers who organized and manned the booths and individual events. The Association extends special thanks to Paul Kovács, administrator of the Home, and Bob Wilt, the Home’s maintenance supervisor, for doing an outstanding job in preparing the grounds. Team Finishes 2nd In League Play The Norwin (Pa.) Community Athletic Association senior girls softball team sponsored by the William Penn Association rallied back to take second place this year in their division. They missed the first place slot by a mere one game. From Page 1 Local musicians entertain guests at the carnival with renditions of favorite bluegrass and gospel songs.
