Miami Man Marks His Own Centennial A day after the Association gathered in Pittsburgh for its main centennial banquet, a group of about 60 people gathered in Miami for another centennial celebration. But the Miami affair was not in honor of the Association. Rather, it was held to honor one of its members. Stephen Thomas, a former resident of Trenton, N.J., and member of Branch 13, celebrated his 100th birthday on May 25. Now a resident of Miami, Mr. Thomas was feted by his two surviving daughters, Betty and Pearl, 10 grandchildren, 27 greatgrandchildren and two greatgreat-grandchildren. In all, about 60 of his relatives from New Jersey, Ohio, New York, South Carolina, Virginia and Massachusetts gathered at the home of his grandson, Joseph Tekerman, for the celebration. Mr. Thomas, the eldest of five generations, was born in Ung Mege, Hungary in 1886. He married Pearl Gasco at ot. Stephen Church in Trenton in 1907. She died in 1976. Mr. Thomas was originally a member of Branch 20 of the former Rákóczi Aid Association and became a member of Branch 13 after that society merged with the Verhovay Aid Association to form the William Penn. Kovács Brings Tradition, Experience To Home Recent visitors to the Association’s Mount St. George Home for the Elderly in Wellsburg, W. Va. may not have recognized the young man sitting behind the desk of the administrator. He is Paul T. Kovács, who became the Home’s administrator on May 15 of this year. At 27 years of age, Mr. Kovács is easily the youngest resident at Mount St. George, but brings to the Home a world of experience and a family tradition of caring for the aging. He was born in Amsterdam, Holland. While still a small child, he moved with his family to the South American city of Montevideo, Uruguay. He spent the next 10 years in Montevideo before moving to the United States in 1970. After attending high school in Sharon, Pa., Mr. Kovács went on to study at Waynesburg College in Waynesburg, Pa., where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health Care Administration/Business Administration. He now is studying for his master’s degree in that same discipline at Indiana Paul T. Kovács University of Pennsylvania. He also expects to earn his nursing home administrator license later this fall. His interest in caring for the elderly was handed down to him by his father, Paul Kovács. The elder Kovács operates the Bethlem Nursing Home in Pennsylvania, where son Paul worked before joining the staff at Mount St. George. In addition to his work at Bethlem, Mr. Kovács also worked at Life Management Associates, a division of the mental health department at Westmoreland (Pa.) Hospital. Mr. Kovács said he plans to work hard “to provide a full retirement facility for our members.” At the same time, he said he would like to see the other facilities at Mount St. George be used by the Association for all of its members. “I’d like it to be a place we could call our home,” he said. In his spare time, Mr. Kovács is an active member of Branch 8243. Along with his fiance, Barbara Gretok of Greensburg, Pa., he is busy renovating his house located on the Home property. The couple plans an Oct. 24 wedding. Correction WoiTIBn SGGkS PGil PgI In the “Recent Donations” column of our July-August issue, we failed to mention that the $300 donation from Mi. and Mrs. Frank Tima Sr. to the scholarship fund was made in memory of Alex Ganyi and Paul Zam. We recently received at the Home Office a wonderful letter from Mrs. Gabriella Csernitzky, a woman who lives in Budapest, Hungary. In her letter, Mrs. Csernitzky said she would like to start a regular correspondence with someone living in the United States. If you can read and write Hungarian and would like to become Mrs. Csernitzky’s “pen pal,” contact John Lovász at the Home Office and we’ll send you her address and more information about her.
