Branch 189 Alliance, Ohio By marie duruttya Blessed with perfect weather, our annual William Penn National Golf Tournament, held at Skyland Pines in Canton, Ohio, was an overwhelming success and much of the credit belongs to Barbara Botkin, a National Director, and her husband, Les Botkin, a member of the Professional Golf Association and a pro at the Youghiogheny Country Club in McKeesport, Pa. And sharing equally for the success of the outing are the Branch 189 committee people and especially Karl and Dorothy Trumpeter, Zoltán and Kathy Cibulas, John and Ann Barany, Zack and Gerry Taylor and Mike Duruttya. President Mike, and this columnist, were proud and honored to be host and hostess to all the lovely people who graced our humble club here in Alliance. In greeting so many of our visitors, I could not help but think of the many active oldtimers no longer in our midst, yet people who made such strong contributions to the branch. People like the Toshas, Korosys, Baranys, Toths, Hustys, the Trumpeters and oh so many. I feel certain they were looking down at all of you dear people and saying, ‘Welcome to our place and God bless you for your company.’ It was a special pleasure to meet John Tusai, the National Fraternal Director. It was nice, also, to meet Mike Kara and listen to his golden voice of song. We took pictures of a number of visitors at the golf outing and some of them wanted prints. Those who asked should write to me, Marie Duruttya, c/o William Penn Club, 1361 S. Liberty Avenue, Alliance, Ohio 44601. Branch Briefs: Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth WILLIAM PENN CLUB — National Secretary Gus G. Nagy, and his wife Betty, shown at left, and Roger Nagy, a National Director, and his son Gregory, were among those who attended a dinner at the Alliance William Penn Club during the recent golf tournament. AT ALLIANCE — National Officers at the Alliance William Penn Club dinner held in conjunction with the golf outing included Albert J. Stelkovics, seated center; Stephen M. Lang Jr., second from right, and John F. Kenawell, executive vice-president, seated right foreground. At left are Linda Kenawell and Mary Stelkovics. Mr. Stelkovics and Mr. Lang are National Vice-Presidents of the William Penn. FOOD FOR THOUGHT — Pretty Lela Marie Nile, whose parents are members of the William Penn Association, has a somber look, suggesting “Boy, had I known baby brothers cry like this, I would have asked for a baby sister." Nile II on the birth of their second child, a son, Kenneth III. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Gene Warne of Louisville, Ohio and Kenneth Nile of Alliance, Ohio and Mr. and Mrs. Art Wright of Canton, Ohio ... The William Penn AC enjoyed a visit to the horse races in West Virginia. Not many winners, but a lot of fun . . . The Hungarian picnic held in Louisville, Ohio was a happy occasion for many of the branch members. Was good to hear the songs of our ancestors . . . Dancing was to the music of Tokay Zenekar, of Cleveland. The same group will be playing for the Grape Harvest dance in Canton in November. For all your insurance needs, call Zoltán Cibulas at 216- 823-2028. Baltimore, Md. News Branch 8302 and Branch 8330 By KATHRYN MAURER, Publicity Chairman Branch 8302, St. Jane Frances, Riviera Beach was host for a recent communion breakfast and the district was delighted to have Mr. and Mrs. John Kenawell and Mr. -and Mrs. Gay Banes in attendance. Mr. Kenawell is Executive Vice-President of the William Penn Association and Mr. Banes is Vice-President Planning-General Counsel. The mass was celebrated by Msgr. Charles F. Muth, the Baltimore District Spiritual Advisor. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Byrnes were chairpersons in charge of the event. Branch 8330 recently participated in a bus trip to Oriole Stadium where some members witnessed their first baseball game ever. The Orioles, unfortunately, emerged on the short end of the score. Even so the participants enjoyed the event and everyone was given a prize of Oriole hats, sweatbands and or bat key chains. Plans are now being discussed for a bus strip to see the Baltimore Blast soccer team. On a less joyful note, our branch has suffered some setbacks. Terry Tishner, our chairperson, fractured her left hip in a fall at her home and was incapacitated for most of the summer. Adding to her problems was the loss of her sister, Patricia Whisbey. Our sympathies to Terry and all others in her family. Two other branch members, Betty Hanlon, and Katherine Fowler also died and we will miss them both. Betty was secretary-treasurer in our early years, but was inactive for a considerable period because of illness. Katherine was still active in the branch and enjoyed all of the various activities. She served us as ‘‘Sunshine Girl.” She sent cards, flowers and gifts and always with a big, sunny smile to those who were sick. Her passing leaves a deep void in our organization. Jean Deems has volunteered to assume the responsibility of Sunshine Girl and we are grateful to her for her willingness to shoulder this important responsibility. Branch 18 Detroit, Michigan We were deeply saddened this past July 28 with the sudden death of Jim Burinda, a cherished friend and avid worker who served our branch as controller. He will be greatly missed and we extend sincere sympathies to his family, Olga, Cynthia and Walter. Apologies to Louise Vesprémi whose name was inadvertently omitted as one of the committee members who worked with Julia Danko on the card party held in June. Sorry for the oversight, Louise. Darlene, Steve and Jennifer Szatmári have returned from a trip to Hungary where they visited Steve’s brother, Gyuri, and other relatives. Activities are numerous this fall and one of these will be the trip to Las Vegas in October. A Szüreti Bal is scheduled for Oct. 12 and tickets may be obtained from branch officers, or by calling the club at 381-9881. Bowlers kicked off their new season in early September at the Thunderbird Lanes in Allen Park. Bowling is in progress every Sunday. Members interested in joining this energetic program are asked to call the club at 381-9881, or Andy Toth at 676-9377. Plans are underway in anticipation of the 100th birthday of the William Penn Association and the 80th birthday of our branch. A commemorative album will be published and businesses and branch members will be contacted to place ads in the album. The highlight of the observance will be a banquet at the Hungarian Reformed Church on Sunday, April 27. Mark your calendars now. We hope to make this the biggest celebration ever in the history of the branch. Agency Manager Jodene Pascarella recently completed, then passed the exam in the F.I.C. course and she now has the title of Fraternal Insurance Counsellor. We extend congratulations to her on this milestone. For all of your insurance needs, call Jodene at 283-6360. She’ll be happy to assist you in whatever coverage you need. Branch 19 New Brunswick, N.J. By RUTH VASVARY Vice-President Once again the summer season is behind us and we look forward to a resumption of the fiormal activities prevalent during the fall, winter and spring. Committees are already busy planning the annual family Christmas party and the 100th anniversary of our great fraternal William Penn Association to be observed next year. Monthly meetings are once again in progress and are held the first Monday at the Bayard Street Presbyterian Church. Special congratulations to National Director Joseph Arvay who celebrated a birthday in September. Thought for the Day: Have a happy tomorrow — do today’s work today! Blair County Fraternal District News A picnic was held in Highland Park in Altoona, Pa. in mid- August and drew more than 75 members and guests despite inclement weather. The hours of diversion included acxtivities for children as well as adults. The District meeting was held Sept. 1 and was hosted by St. Mary’s in Altoona. Plans are underway for the annual Blair County Rosary Rally to be held in October. Branch 8126 St. Mary’s, Pa. By MARY LOU SPORNER Branch President Twenty-one members and guests attended when Branch 8126 held its annual picnic in July at the St. Mary’s grade school cafeteria. Prior to the picnic, members voted approval of a contribution to the Statue of Liberty Restoration Fund. Money donated by our branch will be matched by the Association. Also, during the business meeting, members signed birthday cards and these were sent to residents at the Mt. St. George Home in Wellsburg.
