Honorees at the 50 year dinner. L. to R. — Mary Varga, Anna Tomolak, Rose Finta, Wilma Barton, Steve Rezes and Louis Peterfy. On a sad note, we mention the death of a long-time branch activist Bill Vargo, who died in December. Bill was an outstanding bowler and would have enjoyed playing a part in the May tournament. Our condolences to his widow, Rose, who is active in our group. Continuing our profiles of Branch 129 officers for this year we spotlight a new auditor, Art (Árpád) Bártfay. Art was born on a farm near Flint, Michigan, the youngest of eight children of Bártfai Sándor and Tóth Julianna of Borsod county, Hungary. ART BARTFAY-New Auditor When his parents first came to America in 1912, they moved near an uncle in the steel mill town of Granite City, Illinois. Later, they moved to Wyandotte, Michigan and then near Flint. Both of his parents were Verhovay members and he became one at age 15. In recent years, Art has returned to Hungary a couple of times making contact with a number of cousins and attending the Hungarian summer language school in Debrecen. A graduate of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Art became a “Buckeye” in the 1970's working for Ohio State University in Columbus, coordinating the Ohio Medical Education Network, a continuing medical education teleconferencing program that serves over 2,000 physicians a week at over 150 hospitals in 13 states and Canada. Re-elected as treasurer of the branch for this year was Columbus’ favorite “coal miner’s daughter’’ — Irene Mészáros Voss. Irene was born of Hungarian parents in the little West Virginia mining town of Philipi, south of Morgantown. Moving to Columbus IRENE VOSS —Re elected Treasurer as a teenager, she married her late husband James Voss in 1935. They had one son, James, Jr. Irene became immersed in the many Hungarian activities of Columbus’ south side, including bowling and summer picnics. Her favorite Hungarian song is “Kék Nefelecs” and her favorite Hungarian foods are csirke leves and töltött káposzta. One of her favorite cities to visit is Atlantic City, New Jersey and it is not because the Miss America Pageant is held there. In 1970, Irene became a clerk in the Columbus William Penn office and is presently Branch Manager. Should you want to know about appropriate insurance policies for yourself, your children, grandchildren, nieces, or nephews, feel free to call Irene and talk with her in either English or Hungarian. Her phone number is 443-7797. Or, you can find her at the branch office, 1501 Parsons, weekdays between 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. At our March meeting the door prize winners were George Tokár and Marge Boso. (We’ll have to shake the numbers up a little more next time. That’s the second time in a row for Marge.) Remember, it can pay to come to a meeting and our next two meetings will be held June 13 and September 12 at 7:30 P.M. at Leonardo’s Place on Parsons Avenue. In closing, a warm “Buckeye Welcome” and "vendégszeretet” is awaiting all William Penners in Columbus for the bowling tournament. We look forward to having many of you with us. Fraternally, Art Bártfay Reporter/Publicity Director 422-4985 Branch 1 87 Granite City, Illinois Mrs. Susie Sabo Mataya, 86, widow of Lawrence Mataya, passed away recently in Harrisburg, Illinois. She was a retired employee of the State of Illinois and was born in Congo, Ohio to the late Steve and Elizabeth (Thomas) Kotche. We extend to her daughter, Mrs. Donald (Ellen Sabo) Hodson and her family our sincere sympathy. Branch 1 89 Alliance, Ohio New improvements are going on at our William Penn Club in Alliance, Ohio. The ladies powder room has a new look! Hard work on the part of Secretary John Barany and Dean Alimon, has paid off, with newly painted walls and new carpeting on the floor. New spray fountain in the kitchen is a big help to the dish washers. We are always trying to improve the looks and efficiency of our Club, special thank you to Tim Leach for his untiring efforts to lend a hand when his help is so greatly needed. Again “thank you Tim”. The Alliance William Penn bowlers and their guests are looking forward with great enthusiasm to the 41st National Bowling Tournament in Columbus, Ohio! The faithful bowlers are practicing hard here in Alliance, with hopes they will bowl good in Columbus!!! A special tribute to a dear little, sweet lady, namely Hazel Haidet. She may be tiny (4 ft. tall), but she has a heart of gold! She has a smile for 20
