pie who helped at our bowling tournament. Congratulations to Wendy and Robert J. Macker on the birth of their son, Julius Robert born on May 13, 1983. He is the 4th generation of the Macker family. Little Julius is the first great grandchild of former president Julius Macker and his wife Katherine. He is also the youngest member of Branch 18, he was issued a policy at the age of 5 weeks. The Club was closed for two weeks in July, from July 11 thru July 25. These two weeks were enjoyed by our Club Manager, Steve Szatmári, his wife and daughter in the Northern part of Michigan. SPEAKING OF VACATIONS . . . Our President, his wife Julia, will be vacationing in Europe for one month. We know you will have a good time Julia and Steve, so just enjoy yourselves. Ronald and Laura Molnár, together with their two boys, Michael and Danny, are vacationing in sunny Arizona for a few weeks, then on to Vegas and Kansas for a full four weeks. Mary Ecsedi, Andy Toth and Julia Chesley took a trip up North for a week, to get away from city life. Hope all of you had a marvelous time. So many people are away at this time, so when they return, they will let us know where they have been, so by the next issue, we can give you more travelling news. Remember, if you are in need of insurance, advice on finances, or whatever your insurance needs are, please contact Jim Nihiser at the William Penn Branch office at 283-6360. He will be most happy to help you. Plans are in the making now for our annual Grape Festival, so when you get your notification, please make sure to contact the Club or any Officer for your tickets. As some of you may have noticed, the Officers are sporting some very sharp blazers. It really gives them a distinguished look. They have worked very hard for the pleasure of having a blazer presented to each one of them. Wear them in good health. Until our next issue . . . Betty Holguin, Reporter Branch Treasurer i I cannot depend on some outside power or stroke of luck for happiness. That I must finH within myself. I Letters of Appreciation | July 11, 1983 Mr. Stephen Danko: This letter is long overdue, but I have a legitimate excuse for my delayed response. After getting back from Dearborn, I developed a bad case of tonsilitis which had me on my back for almost two weeks. Furthermore, I recuperated just in time to begin the activities and classes of the Hungarian Studies program in Ada. Now that we have finished our third week, I can again try to get back to my neglected correspondence. First of all, thank you and your entire family, for the great hospitality we received. It was “igazi magyar vendéglátás.” I had a good time and what is more important, I met many fine people through whom I have gained a better understanding of the William Penn Fraternal Association. On a personal level this means I too will join the organization. On the American-Hungarian level it means that I will try to involve many of my friends who are active in American- Hungarian cultural and academic work. Hoepfully, this could lead to a long-term mutually beneficial.relationship. It was also very good to meet Steve again. Now that I have his address, I hope that we can keep contact with one another also. Wishing you and your entire family the best always. Cordially, Andrew Ludanyi June 8, 1983 Dear Mr. Danko: It was a great pleasure and a genuinely warm fraternal experience for the both of us to participate as invited guests at the 40th Bowling Tournament in Detroit on the 28th and 29th of May 1983. It was a well-organized event which took place in beautiful surroundings; it afforded the numerous participants not only a chance to compete but also to gather and socialize with other members of the William Penn Association, the oldest and most active Hungarian fraternal organization in the United States. We were happy to become acquainted with the excellent work of Branch 18 and with its friendly, efficient leaders. A particularly rewarding experience was our meeting with the members of the Scholarship Foundation. This group of dedicated individuals hold in their hands the key to the development of an effective nationwide Hungarian Fraternal Coordinators Report . , . We, at Branch 18, would like to extend our thanks to all who participated in our 40th National Bowling Tournament to make it such a success. Congratulations to all the winners. Our two Miss William Penn Branch 18 were honored at the banquet. Katalin Kulcsár and Allison Swek will share the crown for 1983. A fine program was performed by Wiliam Penn Branch 18 Hungarian Dancers. A job well done dancers. Also honored was Mrs. Julia Danko for many devoted years to the branch which was very much deserved. On Sunday, June 26th, a banquet was held in honor of all the 50 year members at the Branch 18 Social Club. There were 17, 50 year members present and many guests to make it a very enjoyable afternoon. Former National Secretary, Albert Stelkovics and his wife were present to honor our guests. Also present was former National President, Julius Macker along with his grandchildren and his newest great grandson visiting from out West. A fine dinner was prepared by the club which was enjoyed by all. Congratulations. Our dancers are very busy this summer with many performances. We know they will do a great job wherever they represent our branch. Good Luck to you, we are very proud of you. Until the next edition, we want to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer. Fraternal Coordinators Darlene Szatmári Sharon Gepes scholarship program, which is sorely needed. In conjunction with the Magyar nyelvkönyv, the scholarship program of the William Penn Association will make a most meaningul contribution to the preservation of Hungarian culture on this continent. We feel honored to be able to work together with the Association on this noble and worthwhile endeavor and will continue to further the aims of the Association in any manner feasible and necessary. Please accept our heartfelt appreciation for the invitation and the warm reception accorded us by our fellow members in Detroit. With sincere fraternal greetings, András Boros-Kazai Mary Boros-Kazai 19
