Branch 24 Chicago, Illinois ATTENTION MEMBERS: Branch 24 will hold its Delegate Election to the General Convention, which is to convene, Monday, September 12, 1983 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, May 8, 1983 at 2:30 P.M. at the Ivanhoe Park Fieldhouse, 144th and Stewart Streets in Riverdale, Illinois. Please attend. Betty Akai, Reporter Branch 28 Youngstown, Ohio It’s that time again to get Branch 28’s column in for the Spring issue of William Penn Life. There is usually always something of interest going on in the community, such as, the activities of the American- Hungarian Federation of Clubs. Branch 28 is a member of this fine organization that keeps the Hungarian tradition and culture alive in Youngstown and vicinity. Their annual Hungarian Independence Day program in March was held at St. Stephen of Hungary’s Church hall and it was very interesting and well attended. Rev. Sándor Fuleki, new minister at the American-Hungarian Reformed Church on Mahoning Avenue, was the Hungarin speaker at this event. He is a welcome addition to our town and we hope he will be happy amongst us. The American-Hungarian Federation of Clubs also puts on the annual Hungarian Day picnic. This will be held at Shady Run picnic grounds, August 14. Mark this day on your calendar as it is a good place for families and friends to get together and “Remember when?”—Idora Park, the good old days? William Penn fits into this picture as the greater part of these Hungarians are life-time members of the William Penn Association as were their parents before them. Another event in the community that this reporter and Branch president Mike Tomcsak attended was the mortgage burning at Our Lady of Hungary Mindszenty Hall on March 19. We again offer our congratulations and good wishes to all the hard workers who made this dream a reality. God bless them. You will note in the Winter 1983 edition of William Penn Life that the General Convention is to convene on Monday, September 12, 1983. By the time this issue hits the public, we will have our delegates selected. Our branch is like a sleeping giant that comes to life every four years to elect 2 delegates and 2 alternates to the conventions. A lot of campaigning will be going on until the election itself, which is scheduled for Monday, May 9th at Our Lady of Hungary Church hall, Belle Vista Ave. (Branch 28’s regular business meeting place and date). Congratulations to the winners! Coming up is the Bowling Tournament in Detroit this year. This event also will be over by the time this issue comes to your home. As in the past, the winners will reach out and receive their prizes; the losers, as usual, will come up empty-handed. However, through it all, we have lots of fun and always look forward to the next one. Again we want to tell the members who are sick and those who have undergone some kind of tragedy that we members do think of them. We offer our prayers to the good Lord to help them carry their cross. Sharing your troubles will always lighten the burden of life with its many facets of joys and sorrows. We especially want to wish at this time a speedy and healthy recovery to John Bunchy, our branch vice-president. He has been a faithful officer and worker for years. “Get well soon, John.” In conclusion, remember our district manager, Gabe Nameth, for all of your insurance needs. He is just a phone call away (792-8145) and is always willing and able to advise you on your insurance coverage. John G. In reading news of the 40th National Bowling Tournament is an indication that it’s near springtime. This year’s event sponsored by the capable and dedicated group from Branch 18 of the Motor City can really make things happen, a fact shown by past results. They deserve your support to help make this annual event a success. The coming year will be an active and eventful one for the National Officers and the Delegates, due to the General Convention which is to convene Monday, September 12, 1983. The Board of Directors have set May, 1983 to be the month the Convention Delegates and the Alternates to be elected. As the Secretary of District 9, 1 wish to inform our members, the meeting for the election of the Delegates will be held Saturday, May 14th, 1983, commencing at 8:00 P.M. at the Philadelphia Hungarian Club, 1125 Southampton Road, Philadelphia, Pa. We urge all our interested members to attend. Wishing you all a healthy and enjoyable summer. Fraternally yours, Steve Szemes Branch 1 74 Scranton, Pa. George Horvath, manager of Scranton Branch 174 of the William Penn Association, presents plaque to Edward Popil, secretarytreasurer of the Ukrainian Fraternal Association of Scranton, honoring him as "Fraternalist of the Year” for his work in promoting fraternalism in this area. Branch 189 Alliance, Ohio Branch 189, had the extreme pleasure and honor of being host to National Director Steve Lesco and his lovely wife, Betty and also to Sales Representative James Telegdy and his lovely wife Rose, at one of our famous Friday night steak fry, held at the William Penn Club. An enjoyable evening was spent visiting with our distinguished guests. Managers Pug and Penny Duruttya were honored to meet our guests and they invited them back to visit us again real soon. I have two little stories I would like to share with members of Br. 189, as heard by me at the William Penn Club — Back in 1924, a boy named Mike Szekely, saw a gypsy who had a hand scoop and a horse, bring bricks to a site
