Branch 1 8 Ladies Auxiliary Detroit, Michigan The Ladies Auxiliary had their first fall meeting in September and a good turnout was had. Two members were added to our roster, Irene Gall and Barbara House. Nice to see Irene Gall back with us. Plans have been made on November 12th to work at the Allen Park Veterans Hospital with twelve of our members helping. Also at our next meeting plans will be made for our Christmas party and also for our 1984 election of officers. With our sick, Cecelia Vespremi is not doing well. She expects to have surgery on her eyes. Mrs. Ethel Torok also had eye surgery. We wish these ladies a speedy recovery with cards of cheer from members and secretary Louise. It was nice to see Frank Kato, husband to Mary, at our meeting thanking everyone for prayers and cards during his surgery. Our deepest sympathy goes to Mary Boka whose brother passed away in Virginia and attended his funeral, also to Margaret New whose aunt, Mrs. Irene Kurosz of Dayton, Ohio passed away and she with sisters Ethel and Julia attended the funeral. May God grant them eternal rest. Happy 35th Anniversary goes to Paul and Mary Gyorke. They are planning to go to Hawaii with friends for two weeks in October, so aloha Paul and Mary. Vacations: Being it was a hot summer, many of our members had long and short vacations and safe ones. Julia Danko with husband Steve to Hungary, Betty Kocsis with sister from Florida to Hungary and also Emma Collins to Hungary. Emma did not unpack and a few days later went to Florida with her husband. Our president Darlene Szatmári with her family went up North for a rest and our vice president Eleanor Kender who is doing well after surgery, with her family, spent time at Whitmore Lake staying cool. Marge Penzes with husband Joe traveled to West Virginia, Elvira Kubovics with husband Leslie spent time up North at their home relaxing and fishing. Last but not least, secretary Louise with brother Sam visited old friends in the Thumb area. If any ladies wish to join our auxiliary please come to our meetings the third Monday of each month. Our meetings are held at the William Penn Social Club on Southfield Road, in Lincoln Park, Michigan. We have a nice group of ladies and officers with Darlene Szatmári as our president and we are progressing very well. After our meetings we have dessert and our fellowship continues celebrating birthdays and etc. Secretary Louise wishes all members a Happy Holiday with the best of health for the new year and happiness. Secretary, Louise Vespremi William Penn Branch 1 8 Hungarian Dancers The dance group has been very well received by many people. Recently we performed for the Hungarian Club of Detroit at their Szüreti Bal held at the Wyandotte Yack Arena where we were honored with an award for the dedication and the many hours to keep the Hungarian Culture alive in Detroit. The other two groups present, Hungarian Folk Dancers and Dancers Hungária were also awarded. Congratulations to all. On October 1st, we had the pleasure of performing at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Allen Park, Michigan. The group surprised the audience with a very formal Palotas Dance. The girls were dressed in long white satin/lace skirts, red velvet vests and headpieces and lace gloves. The men were very handsome in thier very formal tail tuxedos and white gloves. It was truly enjoyed by all and congratulations were received by all the dancers for a job well done. On October 8th, the dancers entertained at the Holy Cross Church for their Szüreti Bal. Again it was enjoyed by all. The dance group has not only been very busy with performances but it has been growing as well. We have eleven new dancers, two of which are in our intermediate group and the other nine are our newest and youngest group. There are three boys and six girls, ages three and four. They made their debut at the Wm. Penn Social Club’s Szüreti Bal October 15th which was a huge success. The little ones sang “Az a Szep” and danced two dances for the audience. They were not only cute but were great and were loved by each and every person in the audience. The group will now be busy in organizing their Annual Christmas Card Party to be held Monday, November 28th, at the Wm. Penn Social Club. Tickets will be on sale at the Club or can be bought from each dancer. Donation is $3.00 per person. As director of the dance group and on their behalf, I would like to sincerely thank the many many supporters and followers of our dance group. We love you and we offer a BIG THANK YOU to you all. Darlene Szatmári Dance Group Director Branch 28 Youngstown, Ohio As always all events are in the future, but they come and they go. The Convention is now history. We had a happy time and met a lot of nice people. I, as delegate, enjoyed being at the business end of the Convention. We should all congratulate Mike Tomcsak for being elected No. 1 Alternate- Delegate. Branch 28 is proud to have such representation in Pittsburgh. You can read about the Convention in this issue of William Penn Life as I am sure that it will be written up in detail. However, at this point we would like to thank the Knights of St. George for their wonderful hospitality and we are grateful that they are a part of us now. We hope that we will all grow fraternally as well as financially in the years to come. Our one regret at the Convention was to learn of the death of Vice- President Louis Varga. Our sympathy goes out to his family. The 3rd Hungarian Annual Golf Tournament held at Spring Lakes on September 17th was another occasion of friendly competition and fellowship. It was very well attended and everyone had a good time. Plan on making this event next year. The Hungarian senior citizens’ luncheons are in full swing. The luncheon is held on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Four Hungarian churches of the Mahoning Valley are represented. Reservations are necessary if you plan on attending. Of course, you must be a member to make a reservation but there are occasions when you can bring a guest just as long as the reservation committee is 21
