William Penn Life, 1982 (17. évfolyam, 1-4. szám)
1982-07-01 / 3. szám
Our bowlers enjoyed the Cleveland Tournament even though we didn’t come home with first prize, we did have fun and are looking forward to the 1983 Tournament in Detroit. At our May meeting, we discussed the possibility of holding our usual Hungarian Picnic, however, we could not get an orchestra for the days that the picnic grounds were available, therefore, it was decided to conduct a 50/50 raffle instead, proceeds of which will be utilized towards the cost of a cabin at Penn Scenic View. In addition to this, it was decided by the members present, to hold a Family Basket Picnic at Scenic View on Saturday, July 10, 1982, inviting all branch members and Officers of the nearby Branches. The June meeting had, as has been the custom of our Hungarian cookouts, (Szolonna Sutes). Despite the rain, there was a good turnout and everyone had a good time. The Family Picnic was attended by about 125 members and friends. There was a busload of William Penners from the Springdale area and many came by private cars. The day started out sunny, warm and pleasant. It was nice to see so many old friends. We were pleased to see representatives from Branch 34, Pittsburgh; Branch 71, Duquesne; Branch 89, Homestead and Branch 226, McKeesport. For entertainment, there was music for listening and dancing pleasure. Despite a rain shower early in the afternoon, our members enjoyed looking over Penn’s Scenic View, some enjoyed Branch 296 Springdale, Pa. fishing, tennis, swimming, cards and singing of Hungarian songs. It was really an enjoyable outing. A gathering of such a large group of members was the ideal time and place for Mr. Elmer Charles, National President, to announce that the Fraternal Communicators Award would be made at this time. He explained to the members that the purpose of the National Fraternal Congress program was namely to recognize a member of the Branch who dedicated much of his time and efforts in promoting fraternalism in the Branch and community. Mr. Charles called on Mr. Jay Blizman, Chairman of the Branch Entertainment Committee to make the presentation. Mr. John P. Balia, President of Branch 296, and National Vice- President was selected as the 1982 recipient of the Fraternal Communicators Award. Mr. Balia has served as our Officer of Branch 296 since 1954. This is his second go around as Branch President, having so served in the last 15 years. He has served as a National Director since 1955, as National Vice-President, formerly Chairman of the Board, past Secretary of the Board, a member of the Association’s Finance Committee and a member of the Consolidation Committee. He has served for many years as a National Bowling Tournament Administrator. He is Vice- President of the Scholarship Foundation and one of its main supporters. In the past he was on the William Penn Club Board of Managers and has spent a good deal of his time enrolling new members. He learned his love for Hungarian fraternalism from his late Father, who for many years was Secretary of the former Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation, Springdale Branch. Mr. Balia was a respected employee of the Aluminum Company of America and served as a member of the U.S.W. Negotiating Committee for 30 years. After retiring from Alcoa, he became a Deputy Sheriff in Westmoreland County until he retired. Mr. Balia, and his wife Emma, nee Torok, early this year, celebrated the Golden Anniversary of their wedding. John certainly deserves this recognition because he has been the embodiment of Mr. Fraternal in the Branch 296 area. We wish Mr. Balia many more years of good health so that he can continue to serve his fellow man in the fraternal field.
