Lucky, John Jonas, Louis FROM THE HEART PERFORMANCE WANTED, NOT EXCUSES The late Dean Briggs of Harvard once asked a student why he had failed to complete an assignment. Said the student: “I wasn’t feeling very well, sir.” To that reply, Dean Briggs said: “I think that in time you may perhaps find that most of the work of the world is done by people who aren’t feeling very well.” Perhaps the Dean was thinking of himself, for he was not in robust health. Perhaps he would rather have remained in bed that day. But he, too, had an assignment that day: a responsibility to his students. Sometimes, there is but a thin line separating not feeling very well and not wanting to complete a difficult job. Thinking and wishing one is ill and just plain laziness are similar. How does one tell the difference? In this particular case, the student was given the assignment on Monday and it was due on Friday. Dean Briggs knew that anyone who intended to complete the assignment would certainly have started it on Tuesday or Wednesday. Would it matter, then, if the student didn’t feel very well on Thursday or Friday? And isn’t it interesting that most people are “ill” on Monday or Friday? Yes, that makes for an even longer weekend. But those people failed to complete their assignments. Work is your responsibility. 133 PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. Miknyoczki, Julius 159 PHOENIXVILLE, PA. Szabó, Alexander J.
