Joe Lorincz and Steve Vargo will be the administrators. More on that in our next issue. A few of our members are keeping in shape for the bowling tournament by entering the bowling tournament in Monroe, namely: Andy Toth, Ernie Toth, Ernie Ecsedi, Larry Nemeth, Joe Nemeth, and Steve Szalai. Hope you came in big winners!!! Joe Gall was given a surprise retirement party by his daughter Barbara and son-in-law, Tom House. The event was held at the social club with dinner and live entertainment on April 3, 1982. Joe has retired from eleven years of service with Shatterproof Glass Company, whereby a plaque was presented to him from John Svendor of Shatterproof Glass Company. Enjoy your retirement Joe, and congratulations!! We wish to welcome back Mr. Macker, as it seems he has been down in Florida most of last year and has just returned. Olga and Jim Burinda are also back from Florida, but 1 understand Olga has her bags packed ready to go back. Ernie Ecsedi and Steve Szalai are also back from their golfing tournament which was held at Myrtle Beach. Hope you two come in the money. It was also gratifying to see John Ulics at our recent meeting after his illness. Nice to see you around John. Just take it easy and all will be well. Bill Kocsis is also nicely recovering from his recent eye operation. Les Kubovitz recently was operated on a by pass. It was a pleasure to see Les at the bowling alley Sunday, rooting his team on. He has done remarkably well. As many of you may know, our social club manager, Steve Szatmári had also undergone heart surgery in Texas. Steve is back home now, and will be off work until August. The club is open and everyone that can, has pitched in to help. Steve has an excellent nurse, his wife Darlene, and a faithful nurse’s aid, his daughter, Jennifer. They are really taking good care of him. We all miss Steve, and hope his return will soon be here. We all know it takes time Steve, so just take it easy. All is well at the club, thanks to all the help. Steve and Julia Danko have been putting in many hard hours, but it shows. Thanks to Andy Toth and others that have helped so far, and anyone else who has helped and will help at the club. We are sorry to report that John Kender, one of our good members, is being hospitalized at Beaumont Hospital after he had suffered a stroke. Many of you know John, as a bowler, friend or an acquaintance. I am sure he would welcome a card, and perhaps a visit when permissable. Get well soon, John. We wish to offer our sympathy to Betty Soter on the loss of her dear father, in Europe. Betty and husband Joe, went to Hungary for the funeral, and have just returned. Please accept our sympathies Betty and Joe. Remember . . . our 50/50 drawing will take place at the tournament in Cleveland. If you have not returned your tickets or money, please do so before the tournament. Hope to see you in Cleveland . . . Betty Holguin Treasurer, Branch 18 Lorincz Named 'Bowler's Man of the Year' The Board of Directors of the Greater Detroit Bowling Association is pleased to announce that Joseph Lorincz has been selected as this year’s “Bowler’s Man of the Year”. Joe has been one of the silent men that is a “doer” and does not receive the credit and acclaim he deserves because of his quiet nature. He has certainly been one of the most active men in our Association for many years. He was first elected to the Board in 1963 and served as the President in 1972-73. Joe Lorincz Joe’s interest in bowling and desire to be totally active dictated his running again as a Director for the Western District. He has continued to do an excellent job in that area. He is a zone director for the Michigan State Bowling Association and active in promotion of the State Seniors program. Joe has also long been active in the junior program and is a certified instructor. Lorincz has been the main reason for the continued success of our Association Masters tournament. As stated, he is a doer, and it has been aptly demonstrated in his constant trips to the top leagues to promote the Masters and to return again and again to pick up entries. He also spends two weekends at the site and is a vital part of the tournament. His tenacity is also obvious in the job he does for the city tournament. He makes repeated trips to many leagues and picks up teams from a number of leagues. This season he was responsible for 36 teams entering the tournament. It is obvious from the above brief sketch that Joe’s heart is in promoting bowling and the Association programs. He was an excellent choice and is richly deserving of this honor. He will receive his award as GDBA “Bowler’s Man of the Year” at the Champions Award Banquet, June 24 at the Polish Century Club. Joe is also a life-long William Penn bowler and has participated in every William Penn Association tournament to date. Joe and Steve Vargo have been appointed by Stephen Danko, President of Branch 18 to administer the 1983 William Penn Association National Bowling Tournament to be held in Detroit. 9
