Minutes of the Board of Directors Quarterly Meeting Excerpts from Minutes of the Second Quarterly Board Meeting of the William Penn Association held June 8-10, 1981, in the Board Room of the Home Office in Pittsburgh, Pa. 1) National President and Chairman of the Board, Elmer Charles opened the meeting at 10:00 A.M. He welcomed the Board of Directors and National Officers to the mid-year Board meeting. He stated the Agenda contains many important items which will require deliberation and decisions. Mr. Charles stated that yesterday was Pentecost and for inspiration he asked that the spirit of purpose come upon us because that is our obligation to build our organization. Mr. Charles read a quote that is very inspiring, “Isten segítségével minden lehetséges ami jó, igazságos és becsületes.” Mr. Charles would like to start this June meeting with this theme. The President announced the following who were hospitalized since the last Board meeting. Acting Treasurer Gus G. Nagy. Mrs. Julius E. Somogyi, wife of former National Treasurer Julius E. Somogyi. Frank Balogh, Branch Manager of Chicago Branch 15 and Chicago Bowling Tournament Co-ordinator. He reported the following deaths since the last Board meeting: Louis Janik, Vice President former American Life Insurance Association. Mr. Janik was very helpful in bringing about the ALIA merger with William Penn Association. Mrs. Margaret Fulop (Phillips), wife of the late District Manager of the Pittsburgh Area, John J. Fulop. Mrs. Margit Tankovich, Columbus, Ohio —50 Year member. The members rose for a moment of silent prayer in memory of all deceased members. Mr. Charles also extended wedding congratulations to: Mr. and Mrs. George (Pete) Charles —Pete is a Home Office Employee. Judy Bero, daughter of Director and Mrs. Frank Bero, Fairfield, Conn. The President announced that the Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday will be held at Penn Scenic View. Mr. Charles stated that former National Treasurer Julius E. Somogyi is unable to attend the opening of this Board meeting and he extended sincere thanks and appreciation to the Board for the kind invitation extended to him and Mrs. Somogyi to attend the Bowling Tournament in Chicago. The Agenda is prepared and Mr. Charles officially calls the meeting to order. 2) The members rose and pledged allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America. Governor Dick Thornburgh Proclaims Fraternal Week in Pennsylvania (HARRISBURG, PA.) —Louis Skeparnias, executive director of the Governor's Heritage Commission; Stephen Szilagyi, vice-president of the William Penn Association; George Kostelnik, president of the Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress; Gov. Dick Thornburgh and John Radzyminski, Polish commissioner on the Governor's Heritage Commission gather in Harrisburg for the governor's proclamation of Fraternal Week, June 8-14, in the Commonwealth. Leaders of Pennsylvania’s fraternal benefit associations met with Gov. Dick Thornburgh in the Governor’s Reception Room in Harrisburg for special ceremonies marking the governor’s proclamation of June 8-14 as “Fraternal Week” in the Keystone State. “The fraternal benefit system has long played a vital role in serving the social and economic needs of all citizens,” the governor told officers of over 15 fraternal organizations present for the ceremonies. Executive Director Louis Skeparnias and chairman Charles Bojanic of the Governor’s Heritage Affairs Commission and Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael Brown joined with the governor and fraternalists for the event which is held annually to honor the humanitarian and patriotic endeavors of the fraternal benefit system. Gov. Thornburgh lauded the activities of the various fraternal organizations, noting particularly their devotion to special annual observances of Flag Day. In concluding the ceremonies, the governor called upon all citizens of the Commonwealth to “recognize the outstanding contributions and services of fraternal organizations” and urged all to join with fraternalists in observing Fraternal Week and Flag Day. 26
