Branch 214 Flint, Michigan The Branch held Officer elections along with the Children’s Christmas Party after a short business meeting on December 7, 1980. The adults enjoyed the Christmas Party as much as the children. Everyone sang in both Hungarian and English. The children had games, refreshments, Christmas gifts and of' course, the Hungarian Carols. Special thanks to Mrs. Catherine Nadasi, Mrs. Elizabeth Tenk, Mrs. Mary Udvarnory, and Mrs. Mary Vasas. Thanks again for the delicious pastries and for the help in serving refreshments. Marton Nadasi The NATIONAL PRESIDENT'S CORNER Thoreau said it best, “it is not enough to be busy — the question is — what are we busy about." Your association has been busy about adhering to its by-laws which provide that the purposes of the William Penn Association shall be: "• to create funds for mutual aid — • to preserve the funds from mismanagement and loss — • to disburse the funds among the aged, sick members, widows and orphans as designated beneficiaries of deceased members — • to retain, promote and foster in the United States of America Hungarian culture and heritage as established by the founding fathers of the association.” And, you will note in the coming months, and years, we shall be doing everything in our power to fulfill these purposes in their order of priority as stated in the by-laws. A speaker at the National Fraternal Congress held in Pittsburgh last year likened the typical fraternal benefit society to a rowboat going up the stream —at the right is the fraternal oar; at the left is the funds for mutual aid or insurance sales oar. Unless both oars are pulled equally, the rowboat will go in circles. We have an excellent fraternal oar —but unless we pull equally on our insurance sales oar —we force our Branch 1 8 Detroit, Michigan A New Year has begun at Branch 18, with our newly elected officers as follows: President, Stephen Danko; Vice President, Andrew Toth; Vice President, Stephen P. Danko; Secretary, Dorothy Csanyi; Treasurer, Betty Holguin; Fraternal Affairs Coordinator, Darlene Szatmári; Controller, James Burinda; Auditors, Betty Kocsis, Frank Lezak, James Lochinger, John Ulics and Steve Vargo. Congratulations to all of you. These officers are already making plans to have many activities for 1981. Our Annual Children’s Christmas Party was attended by 50 children. Santa talked to each child and presented them with gifts. Singing, movies, chips and pop were enjoyed by members to buy their insurance from commercial insurance companies. All things being equal, and they are, a fraternalist gets more insurance and other fraternal benefits from the fraternal, the William Penn specifically, than they can, or will, from any commercial insurer. We are strengthening our fraternal oar and strengthening our insurance sales oar. Beginning this month we introduce a new feature to the Penn Liner —"The WPA Insurance Store". You will find it informative and beneficial. Read it each time and keep abreast of our strengthening efforts. You gain, the Association gains —and the by-laws are adhered to. By the way, your association is "looking for a few good people.” They are not born salespeople. They probably hold dull, routine jobs, aren't being paid what they are worth. We offer them a career with a future. We give them people to see and an exciting story to tell. We provide professional training programs to get them started. They will earn good incomes and some will earn promotions to management responsiblities. You or someone you know could be among them. Let's talk it over. You, or they, risk nothing, could gain a new career. Have a personal, confidential interview. If you believe you are the right person for this exceptional opportunity, or it you know someone who may qualify, call or write The President's Corner, William Penn Association, 429 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15219. Danko, Dorothy Csanyi, Betty Holguin, Julia Danko, Darlene Szatmári, James Lochinger, John Ulics and Rey Holguin. The William Penn Dancers held a dance on January 24th, at Christ the King Hall. It was a well planned and successful event. Music by Lewis Bodo and entertainment by our own dancers resulted in a wonderful evening that was enjoyed by all. The kolbász, potatoes, pork steak, and the cakes were excellent. March 9, 1981, the club will sponsor a male fashion show. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? We will be showing men’s fashions with male models. I am sure all of you men would like to see the newest fashions for spring, so plan on attending this event. The National Bowling Tournament is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend in Chicago, on May 22-24, 1981, and will be headquartered at the Hyatt Regency, at approximately $32.00 per night. Bowling will be at the Holiday Bowl. If you have not signed up, please call Rey Holguin at 291-2882. Speaking of bowling . . . Rey Holguin, President of William Penn Branch 18 Bowling League states that the teams and individuals are really doing great. They took a 10 day vacation on December 26th, and went to Iowa to visit their daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Dr. Vasher, and of course, their grandchildren, Allen Jr., Ill and Jessica. As usual, Andy played Santa to Allen Jr. and Jessica. Helen Danko and son, John took a Christmas vacation to St. Thomas, and relaxed during the holidays. Speaking of John ... he has won several awards in tennis. John received the ‘‘Athlete 21
