HUNGARY, THE DANUBE REDISCOVERED By Ingelborg Merenyi Hungary . . . it’s only now being discovered! And it’s being discovered by visitors who are learning about a culture so diversified that it’s immediately evident the birthplace of composer Franz Liszt has much to offer. The Margitsziget (Margaret Island), a 1.5-mile long stretch of land, is nestled in the Danube River between the hills of Buda and the plain of Pest. Margitsziget features many delights including a world renowned rose garden, a sports arena, a swimming pool with artificial waves and the ruins of a 13th century convent. Budapest holds all the glory and tragedy of Hungarian history. One can view Roman ruins from the time when this land was known as Pannónia. Baths with cupolas and marmorcolumns remain from the Turkish occupation in the 16-17th centuries. The royal castle, heavily damaged in World War 11, overlooks the city; and its restored main wing houses a museum, which brings Hungary’s history vividly to mind. The thermal spring waters of Budapest are rich in sulfur, calcium and other minerals reputed to cure all aches and pains. Several hotels have their own springs; so, you may decide to treat yourself to a mini-spa vacation while in the city. Until How happy can you he when you are dying Each day we live a life that death is trying Living a routine life of blissful scorn You wonder sometimes what that you were born Remember we are here for just a while To travel roads with tribulated miles That's why it's best to live a life of love And thank the man who gives all from above Until that day when you are laid at rest You can meet God and say, I've done my best By: Eleanor R. Morales (c) 1979 Excursions to the country side reveal much of Hungary’s past. Esztergom, built at the beginning of the 19th century, is the mountaintop Basilican residence of the Hungarian kings and the Catholic Church. In Visegrad, you can visit the ruins ot the 13th century King Matthew Corvinus Palace and marvel at the breathtaking view of the Danube River flowing in a sharp bend, called the Danube-knee. Lake Balaton, known at the resort area of Hungary, is widely acclaimed for its fogas (fish found only in Balaton) and Grey Monk wine. In the puszta (flat, sandy area) one can view a spectacular show put on by the csikós in their colorful embroidered garments driving horses over the plains followed by gulyás on horses herding cattle. The juhasz, accompanied by a long-haired sheepdog, follows closely behing herding his sheep. If you’re a theatre, music, art of museum lover; a historian with a quench for learning; a health advocate who wants a complete spa vacation, or a connoisseur who likes to try tempting Hungarian dishes and dance to gypsy music, then, Hungary holds a pleasurable experience in store for you! When the members of the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence some two hundred years ago, they were attempting to create a better life for themselves and for generations to come. They particularly sought an end to unjust taxation. They wanted a government sound and secure — not overbearing in the lives of the people. If the signers of the Declaration of Independence were alive today to pay current taxes — many of them hidden taxes — what would they say? Back in colonial days, the Friends of Liberty said: Taxation without representation is tyranny. They should experience today’s taxation with representation. 32
