VOLUME 15 SUMMER 1980 NUMBER 3 CONSTRUCTION NO W REA LITY Ground Is Broken For Oxford Centre William Penn Active In Project The Ground Breaking Ceremony marked the start of construction on the 46-story building, which will go up on the site of a former parking lot along Grant Street between Fourth and Third Avenues, opposite the Grant Building. When completed, probably in the spring of 1982, One Oxford will be the city's second tallest office building, topped only by the 64-story U.S. Steel Building. One Oxford Centre is the first phase of a complex that will ultimately occupy a six-block area. A 900-car parking garage will connect to it. We are very much a part of this great construction project. This 46-story office building will be built on the site of our former Home Office. The Executive Committee Members and Officers attended the ground-breaking ceremonies July 16, 1980. To quote our President, Elmer Charles, “We have been waiting a long, long time for this occasion. Happy Days." National Secretary Stelkovics Retires It all started May 1, 1 940 with the Rákóczi Aid Association in Bridgeport, Connecticut. This is when our now retired National Secretary began his long,- faithful, dedicated career with the William Penn Association. It was always enjoyable to ride in a car with AI Stelkovics and to engage him in a conversation about the Rákóczi, the Verhovay Aid Association, the mergers, the convention, the old-timers, the problems and the achievements. How to measure 40 years of faithful service? There is no measuring it, for very few of us will achieve 40 years with one employer and those that do stand out in a crowd, because one knows that 40 years are not all days of roses, but struggles, heartbreaks and disappointments. Yet, there are so many wonderful memories, many friends and loyal supporters; people who appreciate a dedicated servant because to AI Stelkovics members were No. 1.
