Annual Meeting of Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh The Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh held their annual Christmas Party at the Churchill Valley Country Club on Thursday, December 27, 1979 which proved an enormous success. The National Secretary of the William Penn Association made a motion which was seconded and unanimously endorsed to give $500.00 to the Children’s Hospital Fund. All of the Fraternal Societies including William Penn Association support very generously this worthwhile project for the children. There were many dignitaries present and twenty-seven societies were represented. Speaking in behalf of the Mayor of Pittsburgh was Richard A. Mr. Elmer Charles, National President of the William Penn Association, also President of the Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress, on the occasion of the Christmas Party of the Frater­nal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh held at the Churchill Valley Country Club met with Thomas Mihalovic and Thomas Murphy, State Representatives who are members of the State Insurance Committee. Mr. Louis Cherpes, the newly elected Presi­dent of the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh presenting the gavel and the plaque to the outgoing President, Stephen T. Szilagyi, whose term expired December 31, 1979. Talarico and saying a few words in behalf of our Governor was Mr. Louis Skeparias, who is the Executive Direc­tor of the Heritage Affairs Advisory Committee to the Governor. The President of the Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress was introduced and was asked to extend greetings in behalf of the Pennsylvania Fraternal Con­gress. The President of the Penn­sylvania Fraternal Congress is none other than the National President of the William Penn Association, Mr. Elmer Charles. Through the efforts of Mr. Charles all of the Fraternals in Pennsylvania received an extension on a new disclosure law until the 1st of March, 1980. Newly elected Officers of the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh: JOSEPH STEFKA, 1st Vice President, President of National Slovak Society: LOUIS CHERPES, President and Board Member of Northern American Benefit Society: GEORGE ZIFCHAK, Vice President of the Greek Catholic Union and 2nd Vice President: CECILIA SAROCKY, President of Ladies Pennsylvania Slovak Catholic Union and Treasurer: MARTHA LOMAKIN, Secretary and Secretary-Treasurer of the Russian Orthodox Catholic Women's Mutual Aid Society. Mr. Stephen T. Szilagyi the outgoing President of the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh thanks his Presi­dent and his society, William Penn Association for allowing him to serve and gave praise to the officers of the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pitts­burgh for their support. The meeting and the banquet was opened and closed with a prayer by Monsignor Basil Shereghy. Everyone left in good spirits, feeling great to be part of the fraternal system. William Penner In The News Ron Baila, a member of Branch 296, Springdale, Pa. was recently elected to a four year term on City Council in New Kensington, Pa. Ron is the son of our National Vice President John P. Balia and Emma Balia. Ron is married to Patty Burket and they have 2 children, Chad and Ron, all members of Branch 296. This was Ron's first bid for public office. He ran on the democratic ticket and defeated a 12 year veteran incumbent. We congratulate him and wish him much success in his political career. Let us all make preparations to meet with one another in Dayton, Ohio at this the first tournament in the decade of the 80’s. 3
