Scholarship A wards Each year there are more and more members applying for scholarship grants and it becomes more difficult for the Awards Committee to select from among the applicants whose needs are the greatest. There were 69 applications for grants, of these, 30 were continuation grants, thus there were not sufficient grants available for all 39 new applicants. Through a series of elimination processes, 24 applicants were selected to receive grants of $250.00 each. These new recipients are pictured below. The Officers and Directors of the Scholarship Foundation congratulate both those receiving continuation grants and those receiving grants for the first time. The Awards Committee was very touched by a letter from Miss Susan Wells, Omaha, Nebraska who had been awarded a continuation grant, however, through tuition reduction and other scholarships she found that she could get by without the William Penn grant. Accordingly, she returned the check with the request that this be given to someone more in financial need than was she. As a result someone else did receive the grant. We commend Miss Wells for her sincerity and consideration. We urge our members to continue to support the Scholarship Fund in the future as you have done in the past. Any donation, large or small will help. Our cause was tremendously boosted at the 29th General Convention of William Penn Association when National Vice President and Mrs. Louis L. Varga pledged a $2,500.00 donation for 1979 and $2,500.00 for 1980. Mr. and Mrs. Varga had previously donated $10,000.00 plan to establish within the Scholarship Foundation the Louis L. Varga Scholarship Grant. At the same time Director and Mrs. William C. Kohut pledged $5,000.00 to the Scholarship Foundation. On behalf of the Officers, Directors, members and scholarship recipients we extend our thanks to these generous William Penn Officers for sharing wúth others, we sincerely suggest to others who may be in the financial position to do so to emulate these two esteemed gentlemen. We also wish to thank all of the William Penn Branches, their Officers and members who with various programs continuously raise funds to increase the Scholarship Fund assets.
