Commissioners Leonard C. Staisey, Thomas J. Foerster and William R. Hunt, MD urged “that Fraternal Week and especially National Flag Day be viewed as an opportunity to recognize the contributions of the fraternal system while honoring our Flag as our Nation enters its third century”. On hand to receive the proclamation from William Penn Association were Julius E. Somogyi, National Treasurer and Gus G. Nagy, Field Assistant to National President. Also present to witness the special ceremony in the Gold Room of the Court House were representatives of several other fraternal groups, among them the Croatian Fraternal Union, Russian Orthodox Catholic Mutual Aid Society, American Fraternal Union, First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, Polish Falcons of America, Greater Beneficial Union, Greek Catholic Union, Catholic Knights of St. George and National Slovak Society. The Commissioners said that the 98 member societies of the National Fraternal Congress of America for many years have sponsored Fraternal Week as a means of informing the American people of the contributions to their heritage made by the fraternal benefit system. “Cultural and spiritual values have long been recognized by fratemalists as worth preserving in a changing and oft-times questioning society,” the Commissioners explained. They noted that among the 77 fraternal organizations in Pennsylvania, 36 of them are associated with the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh, and that the census indicates that a majority of the citizens of Allegheny County are associated with an ethnic origin. The Commissioners pointed out one of the best resources of the county are peoples of various ethnic origins who have contributed to the building of Allegheny County and maintaining its high position among the 3,068 counties in the nation. Commissioners Foerster and Hunt paid special tribute to Commissioner Staisey who has taken the lead in the proposed Park of All Nations which is planned for part of South Park, and the Cultural Studies in the County Community College.
