Detroit William Penn Sports Club News The “two-in-a-row” Champions of the 31st National William Penn Bowling Tournament held in Detroit in May, were presented with awards and money at the June 29th meeting of the Sports Club, complete with pictures, and cheers and applause from club members for their favorite team. Captain Joseph Demeter’s champs, called Demeter’s Five, included Steve Kekes, John Paycheck, Louis Molnár and Julius Turcsak, the first team to win this honor two years in a row. We are all very proud of you, fellow club members! John Paycheck was a triple winner, Tournament Secretary Joseph Lorincz and partner Tom Nanassy also won top honors in actuals doubles event. In short, sports club members who bowled won a large sum of money, and very few were left without winning any prize money. Most of the money winners are charter members of this small, but exciting club, and most of us have known each other for more than a quarter of a century. Long time for friendships and talent to develop with such a meaningful relationship. The club initiated several new members this year, making the deadline for new memberships very near the limit set by the members. Welcome to all the new members—Gabor and Kathy Takacs, Don and Margaret Crain, Zoltán and Beth Balog, Martin Rigo and Joan Leake. The latest fund-raiser made Lou Lucas a lucky winner, the first time since the original seven members formed the Sports Club in the Lucas residence. We had another champion team some years later, captained by George Marton who bowled the highest team score up to, and possibly since, that tournament in Cleveland. How many years ago was that? It woidd be great to reminisce with you about the numerous great times at the National Bowling Tournaments, but your reporter knows time and space are short, especially in this bowling issue. Needless to say, the best one I can remember was the first tourney in 1941 with eight men’s and six women’s teams, as guests of the association, which included meals, lodging, a banquet and dance and gifts which were presented to us at the Home Office, in Pittsburgh. Tournament Secretary for this year, Joseph Lorincz, took the first men’s team from Detroit, Br. 36. 1 was branch manager for branch 429 of Dearborn, Michigan and took the first women’s team to Pittsburgh. It’s been the greatest thrill to see the national annual bowling tournaments grow from year to year, and travel from here to there since 1941. I'd like to see my grandchildren live through the same merry times. Mindszenty József Bíboros Pittsburghi Látogatása Mint mindenütt, Pittsburgh és környékének magyarsága is, szeretettel és tisztelettel várta Őeminenciáját. A város polgármestere Pete Flaherty “Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty Day”-nek deklarálta 1974 jiinius 26.-át. Bíboros Urunk három napot töltött közöttünk, meglátogatta az összes környékbeli magyar Egyházat, ahol különkülön ünnepélyes ceremónia tette emlékezetessé itteni látogatását. ROBERT WEISER MILK SUBSTITUTES Mothers who buy the growing number of milk substitutes available today because they are cheaper should realize most of them also are less nutritious. Thus, physicians have warned that the general use of imitation milk in infant diets is undesireable. Such products may not supply the total nutrients for which whole cow’s milk is noted. The milk substitutes have their place but not as a complete alternative to whole milk for babies, physicians point out. Imitation milk is a combination of water, sugar and vegetable fat and it generally is low in protein, minerals and vitamins compared to whole milk. Filled milk is skim milk with vegetable oil added to replace the butter fat removed in skimming. Filled milk generally has about the same protein content and calories as whole milk but its greater percentage of calories derived from carbohydrates may be undesirable in some instances. At the same time, there is imitation milk on the market which has nutritional value equivalent to or even superior to cow’s milk but this usually is more expensive than cow’s milk and is produced for infants who are allergic to milk. The physician studies which resulted in the advice about imitation milk do not condemn the whole milk substitutes but simply advise physicians to determine their nutritional values before recommending them to patients. In fact, studies praised the development of milk substitutes for use in countries with inadequate whole milk supplies. The Annual Summer Outing will take place sometime in August and arrangements are being made by the committee, which will be reported in the next issue. CONGRATULATIONS too, to all the winners in this past tournament, and especially all our branch 18, 500 and 56 members. It’s still more fun out of town, isn’t it? THE FERRET Jolán Lucas CARDINAL MINDSZENTY A William Penn Egyesület vezetősége, a Pittsburgh és Allegheny County polgári fogadtatási ünnepélyére, 1974 junius 26-án, hivatalos volt, melyet a N. Craigh Street-en lévő Cathedral High School nagytermében tartottak meg. Előzőleg impozáns liturgikus szertartás volt a Szt. Pál Kathedrálisban, majd onnan a közönség átvonult a High Schoolba, melynek nagyterme zsúfolásig megtelt. A program vezetője Dr. Török Dénes volt, aki egyébként is a háromnapi program világi rendezője is volt. A Biboros Urat a következők üdvözölték: Pittsburgh Egyházmegyéjének püspöke, Vincent Leonard, Pete Flaherty polgármester, Thomas J. Foerster, Allegheny megyei kommissioner, Egyesületünk üdvözletét, Charles Elemér központi elnök urunk kérelmére, Stelkovics Albert központi titkár tolmácsolta, a United Magyar Civic Association nevében Czernai Gábor elnök (a 71-ik fiók elnöke), a Magyar Harcosok Bajtársi Közössége nevében pedig vitéz Baranchi Tamáska Endre. A Biboros Ur az üdvözlésekre köszönettel válaszolt. A Szt. János kórus, Dr. Bobák János esperes ur vezényletével három gyönyörű énekkel működött közre. A program befejeztével Őeminenciája mindenkivel szívesen elbeszélgetett, akiknek alkalmuk volt Őt megközelíthetni. Folytatás a 18-ik oldalon 17
