Miss Margaret Kovach, Reporter 14 Cleveland, Ohio Rosemary Amato has been a member In Memóriám, MICHAEL FACZAN Director It is always difficult to properly write an obituary of a friend. Michael Faczan and this writer first met in 1943, and our friendship lasted through these many years. Michael Faczan was born in Kisvarda, Szabolcs megye, Hungary, August 15th, of the William Penn Association since she was bom. She graduated from Beaumont School for Girls, and was the president of the National Honor Society at Congratulations to Rosemary Beaumont. Rosemary is attending John Carroll University. She will major in computing and hospital administration. Her grandmother, the late Mrs. Mary Cherney of Sagamore, Pennsylvania, enrolled her and her sisters Maryellen and Patricia in the William Penn when they were born. Their mother Mrs. Betty (Cherney) Amato is also a member of the William Penn. Branch 14 had their annual Fall Festival on Saturday, October 3rd, 1970. More than 200 people were in attendance and Continued on page 4 1904 and came to the United States of America as a young man and became a member of the Association in March, 1924. He died in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on September 25th, 1970. Together with Mr. Joseph Ivan, recently deceased Rákóczi Field Organizer, he organized Branch 138 in Johnstown, Pa. in October, 1939. He was the first and only Lodge Secretary and Manager that Branch had until January 1960 when Branch 138-R was merged into Branch 8, Johnstown, Pa., of which Mrs. Michael Faczan is currently President. Mr. Faczan was first elected a delegate to the Convention in 1943, and was a delegate every four years thereafter, through 1967. In 1947 he was elected a member of the Board of Directors, receiving the highest number of votes of all the candidates. He was successively re-elected each four years and in 1967 was elected an alternate Director. In August of this year, he was called to replace the deceased Julius J. Lenart, Vice-President and Director. Unfortunately, because of illness, he was unable to attend the September Board meeting to take the oath of office. Mr. Faczan was one of the finest and most active part-time local membership organizers in the history of the Association, spending many years building the Association. He was a great believer in fostering Magyar culture in the United States of America and supported every worthwhile Hungarian activity, not only by participating but financially as well. He not only built for the Association, but was a staunch laymember of his church and a respected and honored employee of the Bethlehem Steel Co. from which he took an early retirement a few years ago. Mr. Faczan is survived by his wife Ethel, who has similarly been active in the William Penn, three daughters, Sylvia, Ethel and Elizabeth, two sons, Raymond and Robert and one grandson, David. His father preceded him in death by a few months. In the name of the Association, Mr. Elmer Charles, National President, delivered the Eulogy on Tuesday, September 27, 1970, the date of interment. Several Board members, National Officers and Auditing Committee members were present to pay last respects to a member of the William Penn Official Family. The William Penn has lost in Michael Faczan, a dedicated fraternalist, a true humanitarian who firmly believed in the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of man. He dedicated his life to these principles and, until his health failed him, never stopped aiding his fellow man. All of us in the large William Penn family will miss him, and with his passing we are again poorer and have lost still another pioneer Magyar fraternalist. — Rest In Peace — 3
