(Continued from Page II) to another. Perfume makers have never found a scent that is universally pleasant to all men. Smoking dulls our sense of taste and smells and our nose loses its full power when it is subjected to the air pollution of civilization such as burning gasoline, smoke and chemicals. RELAXING VACATION? Recreation often turns into “wreckreation” on the first long holiday of the summer with aching muscles, sprained backs and parbroiled skins fouling up the best laid plans. The desk-bound secretary or executive whose most strenuous usual activity is carrying a cup of coffee had beter plan something less than mountain climbing or a bicycle trip if they want to avoid ending up as a stretcher case. The worker who is not physically active should give his or her muscles a workout on vacations and holidays but any strenuous activities should be begun gradually until muscle tone and endurance is established. The person with a year-long program of exercise to maintain muscle tone can step into strenuous vacation activity with little or no additional preparation but such persons are the exception rather than the rule. The word “vacation” is related to “vacate” which gives the key to the best vacation. One must go away from one’s general routine. This can be a physical departure or merely going away from the office to the garden, the workshop, the library, the golf course or the theater. It can be a mental trip to the far reaches of the universe through books, museums or lectures. Above all, a vacation should be a complete change from the usual routine. The physically-active worker may wish to take a quiet vacation and as long as the vacation is something that the person wants to do, it should produce benefits. There is something to be said for separate vacations for members of a family that normally spend much time together, especially if individual tastes differ. Dad may want to go fishing in the mountains mother may want a week at the beach, junior may want to visit with a farm cousin and sis may want to go to a girl’s camp. Such a separation may find the family in the postvacation days living together in greater harmony and greater appreciation of each other.
