Tel. 428-0704 WINES, William D. Tel. 295-6296 (Continued from page 7) four is sufficient; the combination of two or more adds to the urgency. Accidents require immediate medical attention when the victim is unconscious, when bleeding is severe or cannot be controlled, when the victim is confused or groggy, when there are signs of shock, when there is breathlessness and great thirst, when there are signs of broken bones, when pain is severe, when there are signs of poisoning, when serious or extensive burns have occurred, when persistent severe vomiting is present and when vision is suddenly lost or blurred. GOD’S MEDICINE March was Medicine and Religion Month in Pennsylvania — a time when physicians and clergymen got together to bring about a closer cooperation between the two professions in meeting the needs of the whole man. Physicians treat; God cures. The spiritual side of all of us sometimes needs “treatment” too and for this the clergyman is best equipped. Treatment of man’s total being frequently requires that physician and clergyman join hands to better accomplish the purpose each is best trained to do. Drugs aren’t enough for the patient dying of cancer. Surgery isn’t enough for the person whose leg must be amputated. Clinical facts aren’t enough for the woman facing a miscarriage. The sophisticated steps in medical progress have complicated the ethical-moralreligious component of bedside decisions. Organ transplants have added a new dimension to the problem. In man’s early existence, the priest and the physician were one person. Today’s move in Pennsylvania to bring the two professions closely together in the total treatment of the whole man is dating a lesson from the stone age to meet the problems of the space age. The clergyman’s parishioner and the physician’s patient is one person. And neither profession can accomplish individual purposes without the help of the other. To this end, the Pennsylvania Medical Society has scheduled a series of courses to be attended by both physicians and clergymen for advanced training in how cooperation can best be utilized to help the patient-parishioner. There are many times when your pastor and your physician need to share ideas on how best to meet your problem. Hopefully, such sharing is on the increase for your ultimate benefit. 8
