WILLIAM PENN-ERS IN THE NEWS Darlene Danko to Tour Europe with Student Band Three hundred music students from the United States will visit eleven European countries this summer to present a series of concerts. DARLENE DANKO Darlene Elvera Danko, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Danko of 17275 Cedarlawn in Southgate. Miss Danko, is a member of the group a junior at Schaefer High School in Southgate. She is a member of the school band and plays the clarinet, an instrument which she has played for only four years. The All-Student Band, U. S. A., Orchestra, Chorus and Jazz Group members who will make the trip, were chosen from the applications of 1500 pre-selected students in all 50 states. Final decision was made on the basis of musical performing ability and references attesting to the character and scholarship of the individual student. The purposes of the All Student tour are to demonstrate to the peoples of other nations the products of our system of education — more especially the high quality of music education in our schools and colleges; to provide an opportunity for outstanding student musicians to broaden their education through the means of a European tour, which otherwise would not be available to them; to contribute through the universal language of music a better understanding of other nations and cultures, thereby hopefully giving aid in the struggle for world peace. The group will leave on June 15 by plane. Concerts will be given in Scotland, Denmark, Holland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, France and England. Returning on July 19 a final concert will be given in New York. The complete entourage will include a 100-piece symphonic band, 75-piece orchestra, a 75-member chorus, 30 “pop” singers and a 20-piece jazz ensemble.
