NUMBER 3 MARCH 1968 VOLUME 3 OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE WILLIAM PENN FRATERNALASSOCIATION Youngstown, Ohio — "City On The Grow” Welcomes All of Our William Penn Bowlers and Guests To The 25th National Silver Tournament ONLY BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOS CAN BE USED In recent months, our magazine has received a great many color photographs with requests that they be printed. Color photographs of the ordinary type cannot be successfully converted into black and white pictures for use in the magazine except on very rare occasions. For this reason, plus the fact that such conversions cannot be made without extra cost, a policy has been established that no color pictures will be accepted under any conditions. Some of our reporters have also requested that we reproduce their color pictures in color. In order for this to be done, the photographs must be 4-by- 5-inch color transparencies or larger and be of the highest professional quality. Ordinary color prints cannot be used. In addition, the cost of such reproductions is so high that this can only be done for stories of great national importance or for such a national holiday as Christmas. We are sure that in the not-too-distant future technical advances will make it possible for us to use more color in our magazine. But until that day, we must continue using only black and white photographs. There can be no exception to this rule. Lately we are also getting too many pictures clipped from newspapers. This practice must stop if we expect to get good reproduction and acceptable results. — Newspaper clippings do not reproduce properly, because they already have a screen and to put another screen over it will result in a shadowy — darkeness, using them without a screen will result in loss of part of the picture, it might become very light. Therefore, if you would like to see your pictures in proper reproduction bear in mind to mail us only good, clear photographs. No color pictures, please! These are the words of the Youngstown Branch 28 members and the Tournament Committee members. All are working hard and long hours to assure everyone of a most enjoyable time during their stay in Youngstown. Stambaugh Auditorium. Plays, concerts, religious, fire and police shows, with nationally known stars performing, dances and other activities are conducted here. The classic Greek architecture structure holds 2,800 people. Entries by now (we hope) are all in and that our aim of the “biggest and best” tournament is becoming a reality. Plans and surprises are in the making that we’re sure will please all. Wedgewood Lanes, located on Racoon Road, Austin Township awaits the 25th National Bowling Tournament of the William Penn Fraternal Association. The alleys will be in tip-top shape — all 50 of them. Even the 51st lane will be amply stocked for those who would like a coke!! The management assures us of enough help ranging from scorekeepers to waitresses (1 for each seven lanes) Food will be made available to those that want a quick breakfast to a quick lunch. A buffet service will be set up to facilitate the rush hours. The Big- Top Nursery Room will be available for those “Mommas and Poppas” that are bowling with the understanding that once the children are in the big top that they won’t be disturbed! (Now the children can have some privacy.) The Grist Mill will adequately supply anything to everything in the line of food and beverage. Also a room will be available for those who wish to leave their bowling balls overnight. For those that want to look over the Bowling alleys prior to bowling on Saturday will find the Gazebo Room in full swing. As you can see the Wedgewood Lanes all under one roof can meet all of our needs. Within the area of the Wedgewood Plaza, shopping is available and the Wedgewood Cinema is next door to the Bowling Lanes. Ample parking is available. However a reminder that buses will depart from the downtown hotels to the bowling lanes and will be available to the bowlers on Saturday and Sunday. A Bus Schedule will be given when the bowlers check in on Friday night at the Registration Desk. As in the past when buses were provided the bowlers are urged to make use of them because of the cost involved in running them all day. The Ohio Hotel, now under extensive remodeling, assures us of nice clean rooms, with new furniture, T.V., radio in the rooms, majority of the rooms have been made larger and remodeled. However the rooms we are assured of will be the best and foremost they will all have new furniture, etc. (more on this later.) Arrangements are in the making for a buffet breakfast to speed our morning bowlers on their way to the buses in time for their starting squad time. The Ohio Hotel will serve as the headquarters with the overflow of reservations going to the Voyager Hotel which is just around the corner on Market Street. (Walking time is five minutes and we mean only five minutes.) The Voyager will fill the needs of the bowlers also. There will be ample time to make reservations and with the necessity of two establishments to fill our needs we will ask all captains to check in at the Hotel Ohio, registration desk for bus schedules, information, etc., and where our Welcoming Committee will await all of you to greet you to our great City of Youngstown, Ohio. More information to follow through letter and keep reading the Penn Life and above all with your help and with your cooperation the Tournament and the Membership Campaign should be the greatest thus far.
