Mr. Fritz Satran, Program Director Suite 248 The Quadrangle Village of Cross Keys Baltimore, Maryland 21210 Dear Mr. Satran, First of all I wish to express my appreciation for the beautiful brochure, "Europe 85", you published in an effort to attract American students to visit the Old World, including my homeland: Hungary. However, while reading the text referring to Hungary, I was stunned by . your characterization, such as: "HUNGARY - BUDAPEST: GYPSY DINNER" Or from Vienna to Budapest: "GYPSY COUNTRY APPROACHES AS WE CROSS THE BORDER INTO HUNGARY" "TONIGHT GET INTO THE GYPSY SPIRIT IN FOOD AND SONGS" May I call your attention to the fact that Hungary (Magyarország) has been the country of Hungarians(Magyars) for more than a thousand years. It is inhabited and "run" by Hungarians and reflects the spirit of Hungarians. The Gypsies migrated from India into European countries (Spain, Romania, Hungary etc.) at the end of XIV. century. Presently only 3.2 percentage of Hungary's population are Gypsies. The only special contribution they made to Hungarian culture is playing folksongs and pop music in an emotional and ornamental style. However, thanks to Bartók and Kodály, the musical world knows already that those folksongs were created by Hungarians and not by Gypsies. I would appreciate learning of the source of your information that led to such misleading characterization of Hungary. I am eagerly waiting for your reply. Az AMERICAN-EUROPEAN STUDENTS' UNION INC. (AESU) katalógusa Európa minden országába tervezett utazást ajánl egyetemi hallgatók számára. A kommunista rendszerű államok közUl Kelet-Námetország, Magyarország, Jugoszlávai ás Szovjetunió tartoznak az Útitervbe. A katalógus kiemeli a városok fánypontjait ás országuk jellegzetességeit. A Magyarországról kö'zöTt fenti jellegzetesség egyedülálló a katalógusban. Nagyon valószínű, hogy sok tizezer olvasója volt. U.i. az AESU közlése szerint 1984 nyarain tóhb mint négyezren vet - tek részt az utazásokban. A fenti levelemre nem kaptam választ. Végre több mint féltucatnyi telefonálásomra a Baltimore-ban lévő iroda kö'zölte,(de csak név nélkül!) hogy a katalógus anyaga't a bécsi irddájuk állította össze "illetékesektől" kapott információk szerint.
