2021 / 1. szám - Introduction by the editor

Vízügyi Közlemények, Cili. évfolyam, 2021. évi 1. füzet 11 László Fejér provides an overview with plenty of data on the new situation that came into existence in the Hungarian water policy ensuing from the Trianon Peace Treaty (1920). The author describes the standpoint of the Hungarian delegation for the treaty negotiation and presents the content of the „Water provisions'" chapter of the Peace Treaty. He lists the tasks to do under the altered conditions, depicts the situation the water management associations pulled apart were facing after 1920. The Scientific Water Council of OVF launched a book series on future-building in water management” to present the oeuvre of outstanding water professionals of the country. In this issue of the Journal of Hydraulic Engineering the first two volumes of the series are reviewed. Volume one was released in 2016 honouring the 90th anniversary of dr. Zoltán Szigyártó. It was a selection of his publications with the title „65 years in the service of national waters”. The volume contains the most important studies of the author out of his 205 publications dealing with hydrology, hydraulics, agricultural water management and flow regime of floods of Tisza and its tributaries. Volume two was released on the occasion of World Water Day in 2018 summarizing the exceptional career of d/: László Somlyódy member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. It includes the author’s thoughts about the effects of globalization, water quality, water quality modelling and the Lake Balaton. The dike failure of the red mud reservoir of Kolontár of the MAL pic. on 4th October 2010 was probably most tragical environmental disaster of the 21st century in the country. The red mud inundation claimed several lives, caused serious injuries and the event is considered as the most serious industrial accident in the history of Hungary. Lor the book published on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the catastrophe the editor Lajos Szlávik deliberately focusing on water quality disaster prevention collected those studies which provide lessons for experts as well as for lay readers 10 years after the event. Architect György Sámsondi Kiss former government commissioner in the rank of undersecretary of state in the government of József Antall was appointed „to tackle the Bős-Nagymaros issue”. His book published in 2019 presents the chronology of the sorrowful endgame related to the Bős-Nagymaros complex water management system from the angle of a responsible government officer as well as depicts the pitiful behaviour of self-proclaimed players of the story with the distinct backdrop of Hungarian political circumstances prevailing in the era. The book containing 243 original pages and further 184 facsimile pages of relevant documents attached with is analytically reviewed by András Szöllősi-Nagy for the readers of the Journal of Hydraulic Engineering. According to the revier’s opinion all Hungarian experts dealing with the history of integrated water resources management
