224 Kardos I. és Pálfai /. Proposal to establish a water management pilot zone in the Tisza-Maroszug area by I. KARDOS, С. E. and Dr. I. PÁLFAI, С. E. In the Tisza-Maroszug area there were intensive water management activities in this past decade. Floods have here water levels that are higher by 4 to 5 m than the ground surface. Therefore, seeping water appears frequently in the area. Due to this fact, and to the extreme distribution of precipitation the ground is often covered by logging water. Agricultural use is, however, often hindered by droughts too. The damages caused by droughts can be reduced by irrigation, and excess waters may be drained by drainage canals, pumping stations and underground drainage systems. Wastewaters of localities are often conducted by these drainage canals or are discharged directly into the recipients. The proposal of the authors is for the establishment of a water management pilot zone - with an extension of 1123 km 2 - to observe the effects of water management interventions (soil reclamation, irrigation, soil improvement, etc.). The proposal was extended to the measurement of hydrological elements, for the determination of the waterhousehold, and of other water management parameters according to a density of 1 to 2 km 2. Beside these terrestrial measurements and observations it is useful to look at aerial photographs and space imagery, and to collect agricultural characteristics (yield, agrotechnical data). For the evaluation of measurements and observations the use of computers is recommended. The estimated cost of this pilot zone amounts to 8 million forints, and annual operation costs are 5 million forints. The data and experiences obtained would help the solution of tasks in agricultural production and in water management.
