* * * Development of the Oued Rhir Valley by J. PÓKA The paper is a description of activities in planning and supervision performed by the Enterprise for Hydraulic Planning (VIZITERV) Budapest, in Algeria, in the Oued Rhir Valley. The Valley of Oued Rhir is located in the Eastern part of Algeria. Its largest settlement is Touggourt. The Valley is a palm-grove - with an area of 130 km 2 - and is irrigated by the use of underground water taken partly from a layer called "complex terminal" (down to 300 m), partly from a deeper layer called "continental intercalaire" (or albi) by means of wells. Water coming from the deeper layers is saltier and warmer (50-80 °C). Due to increased use and silting of the canals it turned out to be unavoidable to regulate the 135 km long main called Oued Rhir. Its capacity around Touggourt is 1.6 m 3/s and at the outlet 3.2 m 3/s for the digestion of waters originating from irrigated surplus. Dimensioning was made to reach 3.2 m !/s and 7.6 m 3/s - in the same cross-sections - reckoning also with precipitation and the development justified by other reasons. The level of flow in the canal can take care of the lowering of water table down till a depth of 1.50-1,70 m by means of a system of pipe-drains deployed in a depth of 1.70-2.00 m. The main parameters of the plan are: 2 314 000 m 3 earthwork, 9.6 km prefabricated concrete pipes with a large diameter, 33 culverts, 3 measuring weirs, 2 pumping stations. Construction was executed by an Algerian state construction firm under the guidence of the Section Engineering Office of the Regional Water Authority of Touggourt and by the technical supervision of VIZÍTERV. During construction reduction of work and costs could be realized in covering of the river-bed, in the total length of the pipe-drains, and locally in the slopes of the canals but extra efforts had to be exerted on the construction of roads needed for the excavators while moving in the shotts. Additional plans are underway for the drainage of other existing palm-groves and to deploy and plant a new, 10 km 2 large palm-grove. Besides land-drainage, agro-economic studies and a plan for a new experimental irrigation scheme are in work.
