2 in the German Federal Republic (Fig. 1 ) supreme control over water affairs is in the hands of the State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry. Medium-level control is exercised by the authorities of the district governments, 15 water boards being responsible for local administration functions ( Fig. 2 ). With the aim introducing the water administration patterns of various countries to the readers, the Celle Water Board is described more in detail. The area controlled by the board is 5200 km

2 (Fig. 4), for which the natural conditions, the organisation of the board and the main functions of the engineering departments are presented. Of the three engineering departments the Department of Hydrology and Water Management Planning is responsible mainly for operating the hydrometeorological observation network in the area. Major activities include the exploration and determination of ground water resources, setting up a mathematical model for simulating flood conditions over a section of the Aller River, and maintaining a balanced water budget in the environment of the Flbe River lateral canal ( Fig. S

). A perspective policy has been formulated on the management of dry-weather flows. The principal activities at the Flood Control Department are concentrated on the continuous realisation of the Aller-Leine-Oker river project (Fig. 3), developed in close cooperation with the Alter River Regulation Agency also in Celte, and approved in 1961 by the state parliament. In order to provide flood control and agricultural development in the 15,600 km

2 area of the river system, channels are stabilised, structures constructed, levees built and appurtenant work performed at an annual expenditure of 8 to 12 million Marks (Figs. 7, 8 and 9). The water supply department is responsible for Supervising and approving water supply and sewerage schemes, further with a view to obtain sound and economical engineering solutions, the plans and operation of sprinkler irrigation systems. * * * Tätigkeiten des Wasserwirtschaftanites Celle von Dipl.Ing.
