objectives in stage II is to complete the works and structures necessary for transferring 25 cu.m/sec irrigation water to the Körös Valley. The envisaged rate of irrigation development is shown in Table II, from which the advance time of construction can be determined. As will be perceived therefrom, by 1985 it will be possible to meet a peak water demand of 160 cu.m/sec. 5. The barrage and the perspective water management development programme in the Tisza Valley In connection with the Kisköre Barrage Project the perspective water management program for the Tisza Valley has been perfected. Construction is under way on the Novi-Bechey Barrage in Yugoslavia. For complete canalization, an additional barrage appears to be indicated at Csongrád, dividing the reach between Novi-Bechey and Kisköre. Aside from the existing barrages, the construction of a new weir will start at Körösladány in the Fourth Five-year Plan. In the development period after 1985 three additional barrages will prove economically justified over the river section upstream of Tiszalök. The construction of the Danube —Tisza Canal will become economically desirable which, besides importing water into the Tisza Valley, will link the Tisza River with the transcontinental waterway. As a matter of fact, the Danube —Main —Rhine Canal will be commissioned around 1980, resulting in increased river traffic on the Danube. Besides the canalization of the Tisza River, also that of the Danube is envisaged in the present development plans. As a supplementary measure a number of reservoirs are contemplated in the mountain and hilly regions. It is considered desirable to study, in cooperation with the adjacent countries, the storage opportunities in the mountainous parts of the catchment area. In a wider perspective, water management in the Tisza Valley calls for the complete control of runoff. The five socialista countries sharing the Tisza catchment cooperate under the COMECON agreement in preparing the the complex water development plan, which is supplemented effectively by the bilateral water agreements existing with the neighbouring countries. 1.2 Breinich, M.: The role of the Kisköre multi-purpose project in the development of the Tisza Valley (For the Hungarian text, see pp. 40) The extremely variable regime in the Tisza River is unsuited for meeting, in any reliable manner, the growing demands of industry and agriculture, as long as it is left in its natural condition. For instance the supplies available in August with a probability of 80% a re not more than 480 million cu.m, whereas the water demand expected to occur in 1975 in 264
