The methods used for modelling sediment carrying watercourses are felt to be in need of refinement. The methods available so far are ramified and directed in general towards the determination of individual parameters in sediment transportation. These methods should be co-ordinated to derive eventually a model technique which is universal enough to meet the conditions defined by the problem and yet suitable for detailed studies. The rapid development in isotope techniques, automation and electronics should be utilized for the development of new observing and data processing equipment. These would permit both in field observations and in laboratory studies the measurement of many flow- and sediment parameters which were inaccessible so far. The advantage offered by improved observation accuracy can hardly be emphasized enough. Moreover, mechanical data processing would offer the way towards the comparison of alternatives which were hitherto too laborious and costly to be realistic. 26
