CURRENT PROBLEMS IN RIVER TRAINING AND SEDIMENT MOVEMENT BY DR. J. L. BOGÄRDI 1 Between the 8 t h and 11 t h October, 1968 a Symposium has been organized by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, with the co-operation of the Research Institute for Water Resources Development for discussing the current problems associated with river training and, sediment movement. The objective of the Symposium has been to review on an international level the contempora *y problems and methods of river regulation and in connection therewith 'he current problems in sediment transportation. Considering the papers subm'tted in the field of river regulation and on current problems in sediment ti 4nsportation phenomena, as well as the general reports prepared therefrom and with the weight the discussions and supplementary remarks attachec to the reports, it may be concluded that latest advances in theory and pr&ctical results have greatly contributed to the better understanding of many problems. Still there is a conspicuous lack of theoretical understanding and much more of the practical application of the intimate relationships unquestionably existing between the methods of river regulation and the phenomenon of sediment transportation. As far as both methods of river regulation and the theory of sediment transportation are concerned, a great number of physically well founded regularities have already been established. The unrelated application of these regularities would be impossible, however, since river regulation constitutes a complex problem particular for each watercourse, the solution of which calls for the simultaneous consideration of all relevant hydrological, hydraulic, geographical and geological features of the watercourse. It should be obvious therefore, that considering the present state of knowledge in this field, the problems mentioned above cannot be regarded as completely solved yet. At the same time, the rapid development of the last two-three decades is undeniable, in the course of which 1 Corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Professor of Hydraulic Engineering, Technical University, Budapest, Hungary. 7
