(18) development ( Fig. I) erosion conditions (Fig. 2) and riparian vegetation. Surveys are made on maps to the scale 1:25 000, of which a comprehensive map to the scale 1:100 000 is compiled. On the basis of information gained from the bank survey to types of engineering-biological activity may become necessary: maintenance of existing banksidc vegetation, or application of vegetation as a building material. An example is presented in Fig. 3, while typical bank sections are shown in Figs. 4 to 6. Basu Л.К. Civ. Engr. 2 Industrial pollution of the Damodar River (Fir the Hungarian text see pp. 129) The Damodar River crosses over the greater part of its lengtli the coal basin of Bihar state and is flanked by many industrial plants (Fig. 1 ). Pollutions of industrial origin were identified by the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute. The polluting substances (such as ammonia, cyanides and phenols) discharged into the river by explosives factories, gas works, coal processing plants, steel mills, fertilizer plants and cement works are detrimental especially at times of low flows. Results of sample analyses are compiled in Table 1, but these are unsuited for arriving at conclusive evidence. The toxic effect of polluting substances on fish and plankton must be cleared by further studies. The influence on fish hatching must also be examined.
